Exploration History

1933: claims staked by A. E. Jerome for G. A.Thorne. These claims covered some quartz veins which reportedly contained visible gold. 1980: Northgate Exploration - mag and VLF-EM surveys, humus geochemistry. 1989: OGS mapped and sampled two trenches.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The mineralization is hosted in a narrow shear zone with shart contacts with the adjacent undeformed rocks (<10 cm). Unlike the adjacent pillows, the shared material is rusty and contains carbonate and sericite alteration.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The surrounding rocks are pillowed and massive flows. The pillows are locally very large (1.5 x 3 m). Relative to the surrounding dark green iron tholeiitic basalts, the pillowed flows at the showing which extend to the west, are conspicously light green to grey and are Mg tholeiitic basalts. In the area of ths showing, these flows trend to the northwest and dip steeply to the south.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Visible gold was reported at the site at the time of staking. Within the shear zone, which may have contained sulphides, are a number of axial quartz veins. These veins are lenticular and in form, locally banded parallel to the shear and contain very fine pyrite sparsely disseminated through the vein. The veins presently exposed are less than 20 cm thick. Work by Siragusa (1991) has shown that the gold mineralization extends into the sheared country rock adjacent to the veins. Grab samples collected by the OGS returned values up to 12 g/t in altered basalts adjacent to a quartz muscovite vein.
