Geology Comments

Oct 17, 2013 (A Wilson) - The earlier intrusive phases have a number of foliations. The earlier foliations in inclusions and xenoliths are locally isoclinally folded and partially annealed. The numerous later shear zones, which form a network, also have a right lateral displacement. The general trend of these shears is 280 to 310 and dips 80 north.

Lithology Comments

Oct 17, 2013 (A Wilson) - The host rock to the mineralization, consists of a complex mixture of the Chester Granitoid complex. The phases present range from the diorite - quartz diorite - granodiorite with some possible mafic volcanic xenoliths. The diorite contains hornblende altered to chlorite. It is medium grained and displays several foliations. The more felsic phases have intruded the dioritic phase in small dikes and irregular plugs. The whole assemblage has been intruded by a number of Matachewan diabase dikes that are typically between 2 and 5 m in thickness. These dikes trend 160/90. Alteration in the area is associated with the veins and shear zones. The most widespread is strong chlorite alteration up to a half metre from a shear. Carbonate alteration is more restrictive and is typically associated with those shear zones that contain quartz veining. Locally associated with the carbonate alteration is some light sericite alteration.

Mineralization Comments

Oct 17, 2013 (A Wilson) - Some disseminated, fine-grained, pyrite occurs in a quartz vein and adjacent host rock at the shaft. The quartz veins are attenuated and are of two ages. The earlier veins are relatively thick (<20 cm) but short (<2m) and parallel to a joint trend. The younger veins are more closely associated with the altered shear zones. In the older veins, there are small clusters of tourmaline prisms. Relative to other prospects in Chester Township, the amount of sulphides is low. Like other prospects east of Lake Mesomikenda, it is possible that the mineralization in the trench may be remobilized following the emplacement of the diabase dikes. At the time of discovery (1933) channel samples reportedly returned values up to 48 g/t Au across 0.7m. Assay values for samples collected in 1979 returned values of between 1.7 g/t and 5.8 g/t Au. Grab samples collected in 1985 returned values of up to 8.6 g/t Au. Grab samples collected by the OGS in 1993 returned values of 0.07 g/t Au, 0.3 g/t Ag.
