Exploration History

Discovered in early 1950's by R.E. Halpenny. In 1955, Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines ltd. drilled 13 holes (1241m) under the occurrence. Another 7 holes (1536m) were drilled on other targets in the area. In 1979 Gambit Explorations Ltd. drilled 3 holes in the area. Gowest Amalgamated Resources Ltd. acquired claims covering the prospect between 1979 and 1987 and conducted exploration consisting of geophysical and geochemical surveys, stripping, trenching, overburden and diamond drilling. Gowest completed 29 closely spaced diamond drill holes on the occurrence. Gowest completed 23 other diamond drill holes on other targets in the area. In 1992, Noranda Exploration Company, Limited optioned the Gowest property and completed a ground magnetometer survey, 3 limited IP surveys and 4 ddh (1490m) by the end of 1993.

Geology Comments

Jun 16, 2020 (G Seim) - Calhoun, (T-2738) ...Local stratigraphy consists of a series of intercalated mafic (tholeiitic and ultramafic komatiitic volcanic flows. These are typically overturned metamorphosed to greenschist facies and strike about 060/60-60 NNW. These volcanic are overlain by clastic metasediments running across the southern portion of the property. All lithologies have been intruded by several diabase dikes (running and 330 to 360 azimuth which have been offset by local perpendicular faulting. Brittle-ductile deformation and local alteration related to the development of the DPFZ may be noted. This break forms the contact between the metasediments and the komatiitic volcanics... ... surface exposure is limited to a few small whalebacks and shallow trenches situated adjacent to Mahoney Creek.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 16, 2020 (G Seim) - Initial drilling by Hollinger had best assays of 13.37 g/t Au over 1.5 m (hole 2) and 8.92 g/t Au of 2.75 m (hole 8). Channel sampling by Gowest established a zone averaging 4.46 g/t Au /4.4 m for a length of 24.4m. Gowest's drilling encounter mineralized zones that assays up to 6.6 g/t Au over 4.6m (hole 87.12). Apparently, gold values are too sporadic and too low on average to establish a zone of mineralization.
