Exploration History

Gold was discovered in the vicinity of Mahoney Lake in 1911. Between 1918 and 1925 work consisted of pitting, diamond drilling and shaft sinking. A total of 9 auriferous veins were reported. In 1925, Hazelton Porcupine Gold Mines Ltd. held 20 claims covering 800 acres and conducted work consisting of 5000 ft. of trenching, 60 ft. of shaft sinking and 7 ddh totalling 2060 ft. An additional 378 ft. of diamond drilling was completed in 1928. In 1935, the property had been reduced to 6 claims and was held by Kittson Hazelton Gold mines Ltd. In 1944, Aumo Porcupine Mines Ltd. acquired the 6 claims and in 1946 completed 20000 ft. of diamond drilling in 60 holes. This work was completed on 4 of the 9 Hazelton veins, though it would appear that Aumo developed their own numbering system. 5 zones of gold mineralization were outlined on the No. 2 vein. In 1988, the claims were held by Aumo Explorations Inc who completed 25 overburden holes and 9 ddh totalling 4563 ft. This work was done in the area of the Aumo #3 vein about 600m south of the #2 vein. In 1989, E. Colbert completed 1 ddh of 129 ft. near the near the boundary of the Aumo Patents, on the probable extension of the No. 2 vein. The hole cut granite its entire length. The granite is cut by a shear zone containing significant chalcopyrite and pyrite. The hole intersected 1.5 ft. grading 0.032 opt Au and 0.086 opt Au over 2.5 ft.

Geology Comments

Jun 16, 2020 (G Seim) - The Aumo prospect consists of the No. 2 and No. 5 veins. These veins are in shear zones that strike 265/75 N to 285/75 N through the Carlton Lake Pluton, a tonalite-quartz diorite. The veins occur near the southeast contact of the pluton with mafic metavolcanic flows. The tonalite-quartz diorite is xenolith-rich and exhibits epidote and evidence of saussuritization. Pyrite and chalcopyrite occur disseminated and in stringers within the tonalite-quartz diorite. The veins are narrow (<50 cm on average). The No. 2 vein, a quartz-tourmaline-sulphide vein, was traced on surface and through diamond drilling for at least 350. The quartz is white, fractured and ribboned with tourmaline. Pyrite and chalcopyrite, the principal sulphides present in the vein, occur disseminated and in stringers along fractures and local as massive concentrations within the vein. Two, possibly three, lenses of ore were outlined along this vein in the late 1940's. The no. 1 and no. 2 lenses appear to be on the same structure. Small tonnages have been calculated on these lenses. A third lens known as the High-Grade Lens was outlined on the No.5 vein which appears to be parallel to, and 350 ft. N of, the strike of the no. 1 and 2 lenses. The no. 5 vein may be on strike of the Hazelton No. 2 vein to the east. A Hazelton drill hole gave a value of $1.28 in gold per ton over 8 feet, Hazelton also sunk a small shaft near this vein.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 16, 2020 (G Seim) - The mineralization consists of seams of pyrite and chalcopyrite and disseminated grains of these sulphides in the altered granite. (Choudry, 1989).
