Exploration History

Gold discovered on Claim No. 10,800 in 1925. Jones Porter Mines, Ltd. worked a small pit to a depth of 6 ft.in the winter of 1926 extracting 11 tons of ore which was process at Temiskaming Testing Lab in Colbalt and reportedly returned $55 per ton after freight and lab charges were deducted. In 1927, a plant and headrame for a 3 compartment shaft were erected. The compartments measured 4 ft. 5 in. by 5 ft. Early 1928 the shaft was 138 ft. deep and a station was cut at 125 ft. Concordia Gold Minng Company took over the 14 claims of Jones-Porter Mines in Deloro Tp. By Dec. 19, 1935, the shaft had reached 158 ft. and 177.8 ft. of crosscutting and 55.7 of drifting was completed on the 125 ft. level. Ten ddh were completed underground and 8 from surface totalling slightly more than 2400 ft. In 1940, the property was held by Acordia Gold Mines and in 1944 the property was taken over by Delcore Procupine Mines Ltd.

Geology Comments

Mar 30, 2011 (G Seim) - The area of this occurrence is underlain by mafic metavolcanic rocks of the Deloro Assemblage. Gold mineralization is reportedly contained within north-trending shear zones. The shear zones contain (quote) ramifying (unquote) quartz stringers. This probably means that the quartz stringer area branched. Mapping by Delcore Porcupine Mines Ltd. (1945) indicates that the stratigraphy of the metavolcainc rock trends N, but is cut be a NW-trending diabase dike and E-trending talc-chlorite-carbonate rock. A June 30 1936 report by C.L. Laederer for Concordia Gold Mines Co. Ltd. (contained in Timmins Assessment File T-35) indicates the up to 14 veins were crosscut on the 125 level of the workings. One vein that was intersected in the shaft was drifted along for about 62 ft. It reached widths up to 22 inches and was crosscut by later veins. Considerable free gold is reported to be present where the 2 ages of veins intersect. D.K. Burke of Erie Canadian Mines Ltd., in an internal letter dated Jan 9 1939, described the geology as (quote) The essential underlying rocks of the region are Keewatin lava flows cut by diabase and numerous small quartz porphyry intrusions. As far as is known, the quartz porphyry has no relation to ore deposition. Practically all development has been confined to the exploration of a 10 to 20 foot shear zone composed of sericite schist with ramifying quartz stringers. This shear strikes N80E and has a steep dip to the north. In the shaft area, the quartz stringers were found to contain visible gold, but only in an area of limited extent. Surface trenching and diamond drilling has traced the shear itself for some 1200 ft. but with no additional disclosures of gold (unquote).

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Seim) - In 1926, a surface sample comprising some 11 tons was reportedly shipped to the Temiskaming Testing Laboratories in Colbalt, Ontario, where testing reportedly indicated a $65 per ton value or a $55 per ton value with testing fees and freight deducted. In 1926 gold is reported to have averaged $20.67 per ounce. 1928 sampling of vein material as reported by Peter MacLaren F.G.S., Mine Engineer indicates that a vein intersected near the bottom of the shaft returned values from a low of $17.20 to $113.60. Surface sampling by Mr. MacLaren ranged in value from $19.20 per ton to $171.20. C.L. Laederer, Field Manager for Concordia Gold Mines Ltd. in 1936 (gold at $34.86 per ounce), reported that a vein drifted along on the 125 ft. level of the operation yielded $20.89 per ton for a 9 foot channel sample along a cross-cut wall from which all visible gold was removed. Further he reported that between Oct. 16, 1935 and Dec. 15, 1935 on 40 days of milling, 216.269 tons of muck yielded 30.6085 ounces of crude bullion for an average grade of 0.141 ounces per ton. According to ODM statistical files as reported in MRC 13 pt 1, from 230 tons milled in 1935, 16 ounces of gold and 14 ounces of silver totalling $580 were produced from this property. However, the 1935 Mines of Ontario report indicates that 230 tons were treated in a Canadian Straub mill between October and December of 1935 and that 32.9842 ounces of bullion were shipped to the Royal Mint. The above being reported, D. K. Burke of Sylvanite Gold Mines, Ltd. after an examination of available data concluded on Aug. 26, 1940 (quote) that the current reports from this property have been grossly exaggerated (unquote).
