Exploration History

1909 4 claims staked by J.A. Mitchell and W.S. Mitchell 1910 Porcupine Consolidated Mining Company did additional surface work to bring the claims to patent 1936 -1938 Augite Porcupine Mines Ltd. tookover the claims and 2 addtional claim from International Silver Mines Ltd. A shaft was sunk to 1026 ft. with underground development on 6 levels. 4 claims staked by Joseph Leniham and brought to patent by Porcupine Northstar Gold Mines Ltd., and subsequently acquired by Noranda Mines Ltd. 1939 Aunor Gold Mines Ltd. obtained the 2 claim groups and expands the group to totall 11 claims. 1940 Production begins 1964 Aunor takes over Delnite mine property and begins using Delnite shafts to bring ore from below 940 m to surface. 1972 After incurring losses between 1968 and 1972, Aunor assets were purchased by Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited. Starting July 1973 all ore was trucked to the Pamour mill. Last known production from the Aunor Mine was1984. NOTE: Some production records are no longer available. Historical gold production for the Aunor is 2,502,214 ounces or 77,827,555 grams. (Ontario Geological Survey, various reports since 1984).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Seim) - The Aunor deposit is contained within a series of interbedded pillowed, massive and tuffaceous basalts (andesite in mine terminology) sandwiched between units of talc-chlorite schist. The basalts and the orebody strike 260/60 for a length of about 5000 ft. across the Aunor property. The same unit is host to gold mineralization on the Delnite Mine to the west and the South Buffalo Ankerite Mine to the east. An irregular body of medium-grained diorite cuts the talc-chlorite schists to the north and more diorite cuts the basalts toward the western portion of the property. The Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone lies less than 1 km to the south of the mine. Quartz-feldspar porphyry dikes (lenses) and a brown (or buff) carbonate unit(s) also cut, in a strike parallel attitude, the basalt.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Seim) - B.S.W. Buffam (1948) wrote that an ore zone 0 to 250 ft. in width extends across the Aunor property for 5000 ft. The ore is contained within pillowed, fine grained andesite (basalt), irregular bands of medium, even-grained, carbonatized andesite, dioritem and irregular bodies of quartz-feldspar porphyry, bounded to the north and south by dark, bluish-grey, talc-chlorite schist. The ore occurs in a series of parallel and branching veins which do not extend into the hanging-wall or footwall talc-chlorite schists. The veins strike about parallel to the ore zone, though they tend to traverse east to west from the hanging-wall to the footwall. The veins average 3.5 ft in width and dip about 50 degrees N. The height of the veins, measured along the dip is about 350 ft. In parts of the mine, the veins were so closely-spaced and numerous to allow bulk mining. The wallrock to the veins is weakly sheared, brecciated, and altered by carbonate, brown tourmaline, scheelite, pyrite and minor chalcopytied. Buffam recognized 2 ages of veins; early brown to grey, discontinuous irregular quartz lenses and later milky-white, tension gash filling veins that cut the early veins in a lader-like fashion and seldom extend into the wallrock. Fine visible gold is frequently observed in both types of quartz and in the altered wallrock. Van Hees (1974, 1979) recongizes Buffams 2 veins set, and tourmaline veins and gold-bearing ankerite veins. Further, Van Hees (1974) indicated that most of the gold is contained within the ladder-veins.
