Lithology Comments

Dec 08, 2015 (A Wilson) - At hole 87-70, the uppermost package extends to a depth of 32.0 m and is associated with ice which advanced toward 170º azimuth. The stratigraphy of this package is varved clay and silt, deposited in proglacial lakes Barlow and Ojibway, overlying a 18.3 m interval of till. The till was subglacially deposited, into an environment with periods of ponded meltwater. The "middle" glacial package includes all sediments between 32.0 m and 41.8 m. At the top of this package is a unit of varved clay and silt. These glaciolacustrine sediments are extremely dense, having been overconsolidated by the overriding ice associated with the upper glacial package. The till unit beneath the clay and silt may have been deposited at the ice margin or beneath the ice sheet. Field work associated with drilling indicated ice from which till of this package was deposited advanced toward 240º azimuth. The stratigraphy of the "lowest" package between 41.8 m and 47.2 m is varved clay and silt overlying till. The till was subglacially deposited, probably by the lodgement process.
