Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Sutcliffe and Steele 1989; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Jensen and Langford 1985; Pyke 1980, 1976; Berry 1942; McClenaghan et al. 1989, 1988, 1987; Steele 1988; Richard and McClenaghan 1985) indicates that most bedrock in the occurrence area is glacial drift covered. Bedrock consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade except marginal to felsic intrusive bodies, around which may be developed metamorphic aureoles of amphibolite grade) subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks and interflow sedimentary rocks of the (Archean)Kinojevis Group. The basement supracrustal rocks strike southeast, dip steeply, face north, and occupy part of the south limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Intrusive rocks in the area include large felsic bodies, northeast striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Abitibi and/or Preissac swarms, and generally north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic according to Heaman 1989) Matachewan swarm. Several regional scale south southeast striking faults have been interpreted to occur in the area. A geophysical survey of Sheraton Township (OGS 1984) failed to detect the presence of any anomalous bedrock conductors which coincide with the occurrence location.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Diamond drilling intersected a sequence of intermediate metavolcanic tuff and argillitic slate intruded by narrow quartz-feldspar porphyry dikes and quartz-carbonate veins.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - An assay of 0.01 oz/t Au was obtained from a 1 ft section of silicified quartz in drill core. A 1 ft section of biotite schist returned an assay of 0.01% Cu.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Card Lake Copper Mines diamond drill hole no. 2 is reported (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Timmins) to have yielded a 1 foot long core section of chlorite-sericite schist which contained both quartz and quartz-carbonate veinlets. This core section assayed 0.01 ounce of gold per ton. The presence in the drill hole core of biotite schist suggests the presence in the area of a sizeable body of felsic intrusive rock.
