Exploration History

1910: property staked by V. Mattson and H. Banalla. 1911-1922: Premier Langmuir Mines Ltd. - adit (160 ft) driven into main vein and vertical shaft sunk to 130 feet; level established at 60 ft, 80 ft of drifting. Second shaft sunk on small adjacent vein to 75 feet. In 1918, 30 tpd mill constructed and 60 tons of barite shipped. 1923-37: Canada Nighthawk Mines Ltd. - 160 tons mined from floor of adit in 1933 and 70 tons were milled. 1938-39: Canada Baryte Mines Ltd.: advanced adit 20 feet, mining of 335 tons. 1943-49: Woodhall Mines Ltd. - mining 1945-47, 2 ddh in 1943. In 1940 company reorganized to form Norbarite Mines Ltd. Whitby Ore Mills Ltd. was formed to take over the company's grinding plant at Whitby. 1962: Northern Barite Development Company Ltd. - property controlled. 1964-66: Peerless Canadian Explorations Ltd. - sampling, ground geophysics, 5 ddh (2100 ft). 1977-82: Extender Minerals of Canada Ltd. - sampling, approximately 350 lbs sampled, 1 ddh (167 ft).

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Two barite veins are situated on the north slope of a high ridge of contact metamorphosed mafic metavolcanics and monzonite. The metavolcanics show extensive epidote layering and are bordered on the south by a heterogeneous zone, grading in composition from monzonite to pyroxene amphibolite.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The barite veins weather white. Barite forms either subhedral crystals or occur as fine-grained crystalline aggregate. Quartz and calcite are common gangue minerals. Samples of the barite collected in 1922 returned values of 86.60% Ba, 76.50% Ba, 86.9% Ba and 88.45% Ba. Samples taken from drill core taken from the ultramafic rocks lying to the north of the barite veins returned nickel values ranging from 0.17-0.3 % Ni. Samples collected by Extender Minerals in 1978 returned Ba values ranging up to 85.1%.
