Exploration History

1927: J. Brett and D. Duffy discovered spectacular coarse grained native gold (Gledhill 1929). The Brett-Tretheway Mining Co. was formed (Rogers and Young 1928), a vertical 125 foot deep shaft was sunk, and about 100 feet of crosscutting was completed. About $3,000 worth of gold (about 145 ounces) is reported to have been mined. 1928: Brett-Tretheway Mining completed 8,590 feet of trenching and pitting (Sinclair et al. 1930). 1929: Operations were suspended (Kindle 1936). 1944: F.L. Cooper sampled quartz veins. 1946: A Mr. Caswell diamond drilled 1 hole which yielded anomalously auriferous material (a core length of 3 feet averaged 0.20 ounce of gold per ton). 1975: R. Bugow trenched near the shaft. 1979: J.P. Larche completed a VLF electromagnetic survey. 1986: F. Kiernicki and M. Leahy (of Kirkland Lake) completed magnetic and VLF electromagnetic surveys. 1987: Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. optioned the mine from M. Leahy and overburden drilled 29 holes totalling 2,305 feet near the shaft.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - Sparsely exposed (Baker et al. 1980; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) east southeast striking, south dipping, and south facing weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) subaqueously deposited tholeiitic basalt of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group and an east striking and south 45 degrees dipping (possibly conformable) syenite porphyry dike are the host rocks (Jensen 1989, 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989).

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - Rocks near the dike contact are reported (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) to be altered (of unspecified type) and to display little shearing. Several feldspar-phyric dike like masses are also reported to occur near the mineralized zone.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - Coarse grained native gold is reported (assessment files) to occur in the porphyritic dike and leaf gold, some of which is reported to have been as large as quarters, is reported to occur in diorite (dioritic basalt?) marginal to the dike. A gold nugget worth $600 is reported (assessment files) to have been found on the property (this nugget would have weighed about 29 troy ounces of gold, assuming a prevailing gold price of $20.67 per ounce). Quartz veins west of the shaft (in the northwest quarter of the south half of lot 8, concession VI, Barnet Township) are also reported (assessment files) to yield assays as high as 0.02 ounce of gold per ton.
