Exploration History

1946: Marchaud Mines Ltd. was organized to develop a 52 claim block in south central Michaud Township; Hoyle Mining Co. Ltd. acted as operator. A magnetic survey and trenching were completed and 24 holes 1979: Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. optioned 97 claims (including the Marchaud Mines claims) from Garrison Creek Consolidated Mines and completed VLF and IP electromagnetic surveys, magnetic surveys, overburden stripping and trenching, reverse circulation overburden drilling, and diamond drilled 8 holes totalling 267 feet. 1981: Falconbridge Nickel Mines diamond drilled 14 holes totalling 9,993 feet in the area. . 1983: Falconbridge Nickel Mines completed IP electromagnetic surveys. 1984: Falconbridge Ltd. completed 15,000 square feet of overburden stripping, geochemical and geological surveys, IP electromagnetic surveys, and diamond drilled 22 holes totalling 18,825 feet. 1985: Falconbridge completed geological and IP electromagnetic surveys 1987: Garrison Creek Consolidated Mines optioned its properties to the Coniagas Mines Ltd. Drilling of the Ludgate Lake Zone was funded by the Coniagas Mines and supervised by Falconbridge. 1997-1998: Pentland Firth Ventures Ltd. completed 24 diamond drill holes totalling 8389 m on the Ludgate zone and to the southwest. PML-10 drilled to the southwest of the zone intersected 1.05 g/t gold over 1.6 m and 3.18 g/t gold over 0.8 m.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - 1989; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Troop 1989; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that bedrock in south central Michaud Township consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade) east to east northeast striking and steeply dipping subaqueously deposited volcanic rocks and mafic to felsic intrusive bodies near the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone (PDFZ). North of the PDFZ the steeply dipping stratigraphy (and conformable mafic to ultramafic sills) is north facing and belongs to the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. South of the PDFZ the steeply dipping stratigraphy faces south, belongs to the (Archean) Kinojevis Group, and occupies part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. The PDFZ in the area is a structural and stratigraphic discontinuity, consisting of fault bounded blocks of metamorphosed Timiskaming type sedimentary, volcanic, and intrusive rocks which occur in a laterally continuous east to east northeast striking zone in southern Michaud Township. (Archean) intrusive granitoid (granodioritic, monzonitic, syenitic, and syenodioritic) stocks and dikes intrude all supracrustal rocks in the area. It is within one of these intrusive felsic bodies north of the PDFZ that the shear hosted Ludgate Lake deposit occurs. Narrow (tens of metres in width) generally north of striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989) intrude all other Archean age rocks in the area. A recent geophysical survey of Michaud Township (OGS 1984) failed to detect any significant bedrock conductors near the deposit.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Information in the assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake, indicates that the auriferous Ludgate Lake deposit is centreed on the northwest shore of Ludgate Lake within patented claim no. 40917. Anomalously elevated gold tenors here are reported to be associated with native gold which occurs as microinclusions within pyrite and as free (silicate hosted?) particles. The auriferous zone is confined to a 1,200 foot strike length of a regional scale east striking structure which is termed the Ludgate Shear by Falconbridge Ltd. geologists. Although the Ludgate Shear has been traced for at least 2.5 miles, anomalous gold mineralization within it is apparently confined to that part of the shear which is developed within a polyphase syenitic intrusive body which is hosted by tholeiitic and komatiitic volcanic rocks (and probably intrusive equivalents of these) of the Stoughton- Roquemaure Group. Information in the exploration and assessment files indicates further that the Ludgate Lake deposit is hosted by an east striking and steeply north dipping zone of faulting, brecciation, and shear which is variably altered (chloritic, sericitic, siliceous, carbonate-bearing, and feldspathic) and anomalously mineralized with pyrite, hematite (including specularite), and gold. The host rocks are reported to be syenites, pegmatitic syenites, and porphyritic syenites which are commonly pink but which are generally brick red and pervasively altered when anomalously auriferous. Quartz veins are only sporadically developed and appear to be not directly correlated with elevated gold tenors. Anomalously elevated gold tenors are reported to be structurally controlled and not related to a specific host rock type.
