Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Apr 18, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that bedrock in the occurrence area consists mainly of sparsely exposed weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies except marginal to large felsic intrusive bodies, where amphibolite facies contact metamorphic aureoles may be developed) subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group which strike northeast, dip steeply, face south, and occupy part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Intrusive rocks near the occurrence include felsic stocks (one of which hosts auriferous material at the Canadian Arrow Mine), felsic dikes, narrow (generally tens of metres in width) generally north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm, and narrow (metre scale) lamprophyre dikes. A recent geophysical survey of Hislop Township failed to detect any significant bedrock conductors in the occurrence area. Baker et al. indicated that most bedrock near the occurrence is mantled by variable thicknesses of Pleistocene age glaciolacustrine deposits.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 18, 2016 (A Wilson) - Assays from the Erie Canadian Mines property returned erratic gold values ranging from $0.40 to $72.40 Au.

Apr 18, 2016 (C Salo) - Channel sampling by Erie Canadian Mines of narrow (generally ranging from 2 to 6 feet in width) north striking massive milky white quartz veins hosted by tholeiitic basalt near north striking diabase dikes of the Matachewan swarm immediately north of an syenite intrusive contact is reported to have yielded assays as high as 0.66 ounce of gold per ton. The anomalous gold mineralization was described (assessment files) to be ...too erratic and too local to warrant additional work... in an Erie Canadian Mines report by G.L. Holbrook dated January 15, 1935 (assessment files). The veins are reported to occupy north striking fracture systems and faults and are reported to be mineralized with fine to coarse grained pyrite and accessory amounts of galena, sphalerite, and magnetite. Anomalous gold tenors are reported to be associated with fine grained pyrite. Descriptions of quartz vein associated gold mineralization at the Birch occurrence are similar to descriptions of the Vimy Gold Mines Ltd. A zone, which is northeast striking, steeply northwest dipping, and spatially associated with a northeast striking Matachewan diabase dike. At the Vimy Gold Mine, the highest gold tenors are associated with disseminated pyrite within carbonate alteration halos which are developed marginal to quartz stringers and pervasive silicification where hosted by basalt, syenitic dike material, and lamprophyre dike material.
