Exploration History

1934-1936: Vimy Gold Mines Ltd. - prospecting, completed trenching, a 200 foot long narrow (locally as wide as 20 feet) open cut, and about 3,000 feet of diamond drilling; sank a 75 foot deep, 2 compartment shaft; completed limited lateral exploration at depth; and erected a 25 ton per day on site mill. 1936: Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd.- diamond drilled on the Dowson claims (the south half of lot 11, concession 2, Hislop Township), on the Vimy Gold Mines claims and channel sampled at 4 foot intervals along the Vimy Gold Mines vein for 585 feet. 1937: Operations by Vimy Gold Mines were suspended due to lack of funds (The Northern Miner, March 14, 1946).1937: Broulan Porcupine Mines Ltd.- surface sampled the Vimy Gold Mines auriferous zone and confirmed the results of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines 1938: Erie Canadian Mines Ltd. - DD-11 along 550 feet on the A mineralized zone. 1945-1946: Vimy Gold Mines Ltd. - magnetic survey, DD-11. 1961-64: Vimy Gold Mines Ltd.: DD; acquired the mineral rights for the 4 claims comprising the north ½ of lot 12, concession I, Hislop Township.1973: Young Davidson Mines Ltd.: ground magnetic survey. 1980-1984: Pamour Porcupine Mines Ltd.: electromagnetic surveys, overburden sampling surveys, DD-2 at least 2 holes.

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Apr 15, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that bedrock in the deposit area consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies except marginal to large felsic intrusive bodies, where amphibolite facies contact metamorphic aureoles may be developed) subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group which strike northeast, dip steeply, face north, and occupy part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Intrusive rocks near the occurrence include felsic stocks and dikes (one of which hosts gold mineralization at the Canadian Arrow mine which was commercially worked), narrow (tens of metres in width) generally north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989) and narrow (metre scale) lamprophyre dikes. A recent geophysical survey of Hislop Township failed to detect significant bedrock conductors in the deposit area. Baker et al. indicate that most basement in the area is mantled by variable thicknesses of (often complex Pleistocene age glaciolacustrine deposits.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 15, 2016 (A Wilson) - A 28 inch wide sample of core from DD #5 assayed $21.78 Au and for 6 ft, 8 inches averaged $9.36 Au. A 1073 t bulk sample was collected via a shaft circa 1971. Estimated ore 20 000 tons at 0.21 opt.

Apr 15, 2016 (C Salo) - The best gold tenors within the main (A) zone are reported (assessment files) to occur where the fracture system and accompanying silicification and pyritic carbonate alteration is developed within or proximal to syenitic dike material. Gold is reported to occur within and associated with pyrite (assessment files, Canada Department of Mines 1936). The 200 foot long by 8 foot wide open cut from which selected material was bulk sampled and milled on site in 1935 is at the northeast end of the fracture/vein system where it was once exposed. Maps in the assessment files and a sketch map produced by Moore (1936) indicate that the open cut was blasted into the auriferous zone where it was hosted within and/or immediately marginal to syenitic dike material where intruded by a discontinuously developed lamprophyre dike. Visible gold is reported (Moore 1937) to occur rarely and chalcopyrite and galena are reported to accompany pyrite within the auriferous system. Diamond drilling by Vimy Gold Mines in 1961 which was designed to test the southwest extension of the A zone intersected quartz veins with associated hematite and specularite alteration. The A zone auriferous material has been interpreted to plunge southwest within the host fracture system. A hornblende syenite dike which was intersected during the diamond drilling of the A zone is reported (assessment files) to contain low (but significant) gold tenors as was a quartz-carbonate vein system which is oriented subparallel to the A zone and located about 45 feet west of it.An additional auriferous zone, the C zone, was discovered by diamond drilling in 1946 about 1,200 feet west of the main A zone gold mineralization. The C auriferous zone is reported (assessment files) to consist of pyrite, galena, and chalcopyrite associated with quartz veins hosted by sheared (of unspecified orientation) basalt and syenite.
