Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Jan 25, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that bedrock in the occurrence area is largely glacial deposit covered. Bedrock consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade except marginal to felsic intrusive bodies, where contact metamorphic aureoles of amphibolite grade may be developed) subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks (mainly basalt) of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group. The basement supracrustal assemblage strikes east southeast, dips steeply, faces south, and occupies part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Intrusive rocks in the area include large felsic bodies, felsic dikes, narrow (generally no more than several tens of metres in width) diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic according to Heaman 1989) Matachewan swarm which usually strike north, and narrow (metre scale) biotite lamprophyre dikes. A recent geophysical survey of McCann Township failed to detect any anomalous bedrock conductors which coincide with the occurrence location.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Medium to coarse grained chloritic amphibolitic diorite or gabbro which has been intruded by dikes, stringers, and stockworks of pink syenite. Locally, the amphibolite may be variably syenitized (as manifested by recrystallization and the development of pink feldspar porphyroblasts.

Mineralization Comments

Jan 25, 2016 (A Wilson) - Assays from the No. 2 gold vein returned values ranging from 0.002 oz./t to 0.240 oz.t Au.

Jan 25, 2016 (C Salo) - Overburden stripping and bedrock trenching by D. Hyde et al. within and/or near the southeast quarter of the north half of lot 2, concession 2, McCann Township has revealed the presence here of erratically distributed anomalous gold tenors which are spatially associated with 2 northeast striking quartz veins. The veins are hosted by medium to coarse grained chloritic amphibolitic diorite or gabbro which has been intruded by dikes, stringers, and stockworks of pink syenite. Locally, the amphibolite may be variably syenitized (as manifested by recrystallization and the development of pink feldspar porphyroblasts. The quartz veins are reported to vary in width from about 2 to about 6 feet, and are reported to be traceable along strike for several hundred feet. The quartz veins may carry accessory amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, malachite, and molybdenite, and may have irregularly developed to spotty pyrite mineralization along their margins within the felsic to mafic rocks in which they are hosted. Trench samples from the Hyde occurrence are reported to have yielded gold assays ranging from 0.25 oz/t Au to 0.64 oz./t Au, and some samples are reported to contain visible (native) gold coating molybdenite within siliceous fractures.
