Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Apr 19, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that bedrock in the occurrence area is largely covered by glacial deposits and consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies except marginal to intrusive bodies, where contact metamorphic aureoles of amphibolite grade may be developed) tholeiitic basalt of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group which strikes east northeast, dips steeply, and faces south. The bedrock volcanic stratigraphy occupies part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Intrusive rocks in the area include alkalic stocks and dikes and narrow (tens of metres in width) diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm. A recent geophysical survey of Playfair Township failed to detect any significant bedrock conductors in the occurrence area.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - AB-85-143: Wall rock grab from the south (90 foot long) decline shaft portal. Dark green rusty weathering magnetic diabasic basalt hosting white to grey quartz-albite-calcite veinlets. The basalt host has been shattered and recemented by quartz-albite-calcite. Pervasive calcite alteration occurs marginal to fractures and veinlet boundaries; where fracture density is high, pervasive calcite alteration is developed. Abundant (5-10%) disseminated specularite occurs within and marginal to the fractures; only trace disseminated pyrite is developed marginal to fractures. Thin section viewing indicates that the sample has been pervasively carbonate (calcite) altered, sericitized, and incipiently silicified and/or albitized. AB-85-147: Selected dump grab. Dark grey magnetic hornblende diorite in which is developed a 1 cm wide white quartz-calcite-epidote-chalcopyrite- pyrite veinlet. Marginal to the veinlet, the diorite is shattered, variably calcite-specularite altered, and pyrite-chalcopyrite bearing. The sample contains 3-5% of pyrite and chalcopyrite. AB-85-148: Selected dump grab. Banded white quartz-epidote-calcite-pyrite- chalcopyrite-bornite vein developed in 1 mm grained magnetic white feldspar (albite) hornblende diorite. Pervasive calcite-specularite alteration occurs marginal to the vein in highly fractured diorite. AB-85-151: Dump grab. Well developed fracture controlled epidote-calcite alteration developed in a chloritic and leucoxene (after magnetite) bearing diorite. AB-85-153: 12 inch long channel sample obtained from the northern trench excavated into the north striking shear. White/grey quartz vein material hosted by variably calcite-specularite altered 1-2 mm grained magnetic chloritic basalt. Magnetite is variably leucoxene altered.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 19, 2016 (A Wilson) - Sylvanite Gold Mines examined the occurrence and chip samples collected from a trench reportedly averaged up to 0.331 oz./t Au for sampling lengths of 1-2 ft. A 1.5 foot vein chip sample collected in 1956 averaged 3.25% copper and 0.03 ounce of gold per ton. Samples collected by Silcon Holdings reportedly averaged 0.35-1.0 ounce of gold per ton. Samples collected from the property by Alex Bath returned gold values ranging from 20 ppb to 32780 ppb. Silver values in the samples collected by Bath ranged from 0.3 to 8.0 ppm and molybdenum values ranged from 1 to 40 ppm.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Inform. in the ass. and expl. files (Res. Geol. Office, KL) indic. that the aurif. q-(cb) veins which constit. this occur. strike 340, dip 70 degrees east, and are confined to a narrow fault zone (with the same orient.?) devel. immed. marginal to a hb dior. stock which intrudes basalt. The q vein (or vein sys.) is rpt to occur within silicified and var. c fault breccia and gouge, and is rpt to be miner. with finely dissem native Au, py, gn, cp, bn, az, and mc. As much as 5-10% fg dissem. py is rpt to occur marginal to the vein and, in siliceous domains, the py may be var. replaced by spec. Early rpts descr. the vein sys., where exposed by the Tremblay discov. trenches, to be hosted by mass. dark red rock, suggesting the presence of perv. feldspathization and/or hematization. Waste rock piles surrounding the inclined shafts consist almost exclus. of 2-4 mm grained magnetic hb dior. which has been var. chloritized. Min. dioritic waste rock samp. consist of fractured and var. silicified and sericitized dior. which hosts narrow veinlets and fractures min. with fel q-calc-ep-cp-py, calcite, or calcite-spec. Miner. dior. samp. univer. display mag altered to lx. Dissem py and cp may be devel. marginal to the veinlets and fractures, with observed aggregate sulfide contents not exceeding about 10%. A single altered basalt waste rock samp. was calcite-spec-sericite altered and hosted q-ab-calc veinlets. Of the waste rock samples analyzed, one sample (q-ep-calc-py-cp-bn vein material hosted by calc-spec altered hb dior.) aver. more than 0.01 oz Au/ton. Trenches excavated into the vein sys. which was explored by the 2 inclined shafts occur a few tens of metres north of the shaft portals. Exposed in these trenches are narrow (30 cm wide) q veins which are developed in faulted cg magnetic basalt about 5 m west of a hb dior. intrusive contact which strikes about 340. Three trench samp. aver. 1260, 10900, and 31770 ppb Au.
