Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Most assessment work filed for this area was performed to evaluate the potential of esker sands and gravels of the Munro Esker (Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et al. 1989, 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) to host auriferous placer or residual heavy mineral deposits. Lovell et al. (1983) discussed several potential placer gold deposits in the Kirkland Lake area. These authors indicated that gold placer deposits containing as little as 0.1 ppm of gold have been commercially worked. Gold concentrations considerably greater than this have been documented to occur in the area. The area might, therefore, be capable of hosting potentially economic placer gold deposits provided that sufficient tonnage of auriferous material is present to justify a large placer mining operation. The results of the Kennco Exploration (Canada) sampling indicates that mercury is associated with auriferous placer deposits in the area; the implications of this as far as developing placer mining operations are not known.
