Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Sutcliffe and Steele 1989; Johnstone 1987, 1986; Johnstone and Trowell 1985, 1984; Coad 1976; Satterly 1952; Vagners 1984; Steele 1988; McClenaghan et al. 1989, 1988, 1987) indicates that bedrock in the mine area consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) east southeast striking, steeply dipping, and south facing subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group which occupy part of the north limb of the southeast striking and northwest plunging McCool Hill Syncline. Most volcanic rocks are basalt, but intercalated rhyolite horizons also occur. Intrusive rocks in the area include small and variably serpentinized discordant ultramafic bodies (one of which hosts the Hedman Mine) and narrow (tens of metres in width) north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic according to Heaman 1989) Matachewan swarm.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Disseminated, blebby, veinlet controlled, and massive magnetite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite mineralization occurs within the variably sheared and serpentinized peridotitic base of the discordant ultramafic body which hosts the serpentine industrial filler mineralization of the Hedman Mine (described in the report for the Hedman Mine). This sulfide mineralization is reported (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) to assay as much as 1.7% of nickel, 1.77% of copper, and 0.14% of cobalt where it has been sampled via Dyman Prospecting Syndicate diamond drilling in 1956 (drill hole nos. B-13 through B-19 and B-21) and from surface pits along a strike length of 2,000 feet.
