Exploration History

1919: Knight et al. (1919) reported that on the O'Neill-Potter claims (along the Shallow River near the southeast corner of Coulson Township), low gold values occur within a pyritic and graphitic quartzite schist. 1939: By this time, Shallow River Gold Mines Ltd. had diamond drilled at least 38 holes totalling at least 11,240 feet near the northeast quarter of the south half of lot 1A, concession II, Coulson Township. Gold tenors as high as 1.68 ounce of gold per ton are reported. Most anomalous gold assays (greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton) are from pyritic and graphitic sediment. 1972: Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. completed magnetic and large loop VL electromagnetic surveys. 1979: Amax Potash Ltd. completed geological, magnetic, and electromagnetic surveys. 1988: Maude Lake Gold Mines Ltd. and Equinox Resources Ltd. completed magnetic and electromagnetic surveys and diamond drilled 8 holes totalling 2,069 feet near the Shallow River Gold Mines Ltd. drilling. This drilling yielded anomalously elevated gold concentrations (greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton) from core lengths ranging from 2 to 22 feet in all but one hole. 1997: Maude Lake prospected the area. Sample 687026, collected on the river assayed 599 ppb Au. 1999: Maude Lake drilled 2 holes totalling 620 m. Best assay 2298 ppb Au over 0.9 m in M-99-02.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Leahy and Ginn 1962; Johnstone 1986; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et at. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988; assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) and exploration diamond drilling (assessment files) indicate that gold mineralization at the Shallow River occurrence is hosted mainly by sparsely exposed weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) intermediate to felsic volcanic, volcaniclastic, and tuffaceous rock and graphitic and/or pyritic clastic interflow sediment of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. The occurrence is near the interpreted location of the Pipestone Fault Zone (also known as the Middle Branch of the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone (Johnstone 1987, Jensen and Langford 1985)). Interpretation of geophysical data (OGS 1984, assessment files) suggests that the basement volcanic stratigraphy in the area strikes east southeast. Diamond drilling indicates that bedrock dips are subvertical.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Diamond drilling by both Shallow River Gold Mines Ltd. and Equinox Resources Ltd./Maude Lake Gold Mines Ltd. intersected anomalously elevated gold tenors (greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton and as high as 0.256 ounce of gold per ton) across significant (2-22 feet) core lengths within variably graphitic, pyritic, sericitic, and carbonate bearing intermediate to felsic fragmental volcanic rock, tuff, and variably pyritic, graphitic, and fuchsitic interflow sediment. Quartz- (carbonate) veins and/or veinlets may or may not be associated with this anomalously auriferous material.
