Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Satterly 1953; Johnstone and Trowell 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that sparsely exposed bedrock in the area consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) mafic to ultramafic volcanic and/or intrusive bodies of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. Gabbro, pyroxenite, and serpentinized dunite containing chrysotile asbestos on the south limb of the McCool Syncline are exposed in outcrop (Satterly 1953). Vos (1971) reported that: ...The dunite intersected by the holes contains some chrysotile asbestos fibre. (p.58).
