Exploration History

1911: By this time, the property (the southeast quarter of the south half of lot 10, concession I, Munro Township) had been prospected and a 20 foot deep shaft had ben sunk (Corkill 1911). Gibson (1912) indicated that gold was produced, but this is not substantiated by Corkill (1912). Satterly (1952) indicated that 60 tons of material were hoisted and 40 ounces of gold were recovered from 50 tons of milled material. Corkill (1912) indicated that the property was worked by the American Eagle Mining Co. 1912: By this time, the shaft had been deepened to 70 feet (Hopkins 1915). Knight et al. (1919) reported the shaft to be about 75 feet deep and that 30 feet of drifting and 65 feet of crosscutting were completed. A stamp mill was also on the property at this time (Corkill 1912). American Eagle Mining Co. Ltd. was incorporated in August, with its head office on the south half of lot 10, concession I, Munro Township (Gibson 1913). 1915: Hopkins (1915) indicated that the property had been idle since 1912 and that the stamp mill was still there when the property was examined by him. 1916: The surface facility was burned in the Great Fire (Knight et al. 1919). 1950: One diamond drill hole totalling 840 feet was completed on the American Eagle claim (patented claim 52228) by Broulan Porcupine Gold Mines Ltd. 1961: The charter for American Eagle Mining Co. Ltd. was cancelled (NMI card 42A/09 Au4).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - The mine is between the southeast striking Munro Fault Zone (a few hundred metres to the north) and the southeast striking Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone (a few hundred metres to the south). Jensen and Langford (1985) and Johnstone (1987) refer to these (regional scale) structures as the Middle and South Branches of the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone, respectively.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - The American Eagle Mine is within patented claim no. 52228 (the southeast quarter of the south half of lot 10, concession I, Munro Township). This claim straddles the largely glacial drift covered contact between southeast striking, steeply dipping, and northeast facing weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) distal facies turbiditic sediments of the (Archean) Porcupine Group and overlying southeast striking, steeply dipping, and northeast facing tholeiitic basalts of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group (Satterly 1952; Johnstone 1987; Johnstone and Trowell 1985, 1984; Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988). West of the occurrence, in western Beatty Township, this contact is an angular unconformity and is marked by a normal fault. In the occurrence area, however, the contact is less well known and is characterized by discontinuously developed zones of carbonate and/or sericite (locally fuchsitic) which are developed in both the volcanic and sedimentary rocks on either side of it (Johnstone 1987). Intrusive rocks near the occurrence include narrow (metres in width) felsic and lamprophyre dikes, narrow (tens of metres in width) north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989), and mafic to ultramafic bodies up to hundreds of metres in size which are associated with the Munro Fault Zone (as at the Canadian Johns-Manville Co. Ltd. Munro (asbestos) Mine) (Johnstone 1987).

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Diamond drilling by Broulan Porcupine Gold Mines Ltd. intersected at depth the metasediment/metavolcanic rock contact and, in the process, intersected auriferous vein and/or stringer systems within both the sediments and volcanic rocks. A core log authored by N. Hogg (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) describes these auriferous intersections as follows: ...Black, relatively hard rock, cut by numerous narrow quartz stringers and mineralized with disseminated pyrite. Probably part of fault zone. Split core carries 0.04 ounces [of gold per ton] from 506-511 [feet].; and ...Bright green to olive green carbonate cut by numerous stringers of grey quartz...Bright green carbonate from 511- 515 [feet] carried 0.065 ounces [of gold] per ton.; and ...Silicified section [of andesite from 794-796 feet], carrying about 20% pyrite in well formed cubes and pyritohedrons-carries 0.175 ounces [of gold] per ton.

Alteration Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - In the occurrence area, however, the contact is less well known and is characterized by discontinuously developed zones of carbonate and/or sericite (locally fuchsitic) which are developed in both the volcanic and sedimentary rocks on either side of it (Johnstone 1987).
