Location Method: AMIS Site Visit

Access Description: Proceed 5km east of Matheson. Take an ATV trail north for 600m then east for 800m across a farmers field to the site. Site is down a ravine slope, 15km west of the Salve River. Shaft has been sunk for 34 feet on a 5 foot wide shear zone.

Exploration History

1927-1928: J.A. Rhodes - discovered on his farm and explored by pitting a quartz vein. 1929: J.A. Rhodes - property optioned to Potter-Doal Mines Ltd.; trenching; 1986: The property is still held by members of the Rhodes family, who reside there. There are no further reports of work having been performed in the showing area, although presence of the shaft and references by Satterly and Armstrong to core from the area indicate that additional exploration work has taken place.

Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Tectonic Assemblage: Stoughton-Roquemaure

Geological Age: Mesoarchean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Feb 09, 2016 (R Degagne) - In the area, a regional scale structural (and, over much of its strike extent, stratigraphic) discontinuity, the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone (PDFZ) is developed within the Stoughton-Roquemaure Group a few hundred metres south of its (upper) contact with the Porcupine Group. The PDFZ strikes subparallel to the gently arcuate and northeasterly convex Stoughton- Roquemaure/Porcupine Group contact and defines a structural discontinuity. Basement supracrustal rocks south of the PDFZ face and (except locally) dip south, and occupy the north limb of the Blake River Synclinorium, the east striking and east plunging axis of which is about 17.5 km southwest of the occurrence. Rocks north of the PDFZ are (except locally) north facing, north dipping and occupy part of the south limb of the (regional scale) McCool Hill Syncline, the southeast striking and northwest plunging axis of which is in north central Beatty Township, about 8.8 km north northeast of the occurrence.

Lithology Comments

Feb 09, 2016 (R Degagne) - Bedrock in southwestern Beatty Township has been interpreted to consist mainly of east southeast striking and steeply dipping tholeiitic to komatiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group and, to the northeast, by overlying (possibly conformably) east southeast striking, north facing and steeply dipping to locally overturned deep water facies turbiditic sediments and tuffaceous rocks of the (Archean) Porcupine Group. The regional metamorphic grade in the area is greenschist or lower. Igneous rocks intruding the Archean supracrustal assemblage in the area include a mafic to ultramafic sill or elongate and disconcordant mass which has been interpreted to intrude both the PDFZ and the Stoughton-Roquemaure Group rocks bounding it to the south, and two generations of narrow (tens of metres in width) diabase dikes: those of the north striking (Proterozoic) diabase Matachewan swarm, and those of the northeast striking olivine diabase (Proterozoic) Preissac swarm. The badly overgrown, uncapped, and unfenced 34 foot deep shaft and waste pile of the Rhodes showing are about 15m west of Salve Creek. The shaft is sunk into poorly exposed medium grained gabbro or diorite which has been sheared at the shaft site. When the showing was visited by the present writer in 1986, wet and hazardous conditions prevented direct sampling of the shear and veinlet material contained within it which is exposed on the western shaft wall. The shear is about 1.6 m wide where exposed on the shaft wall and is reported by Satterly and Armstrong to strike 090º and dip 80º north. Dump material adjacent to the shaft (samples AB-86-79 through-84) consists of variably magnetic medium grained green/grey gabbro or diorite which has been variably sheared and chloritized.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Veinlet material in the dump was only rarely observed, and consists of narrow (as wide as 5 cm, but usually less than 1 cm in width) medium grained white quartz-calcite-chalcopyrite-pyrite veinlets and masses. Nonsheared mafic intrusive rock samples in the waste dump also rarely host fractures containing and rimmed by epidote and calcite; these fractures may also carry traces of chalcopyrite and be developed in reddish altered rock (probably sheared and weakly but pervasively hematized mafic ntrusive material). Satterly and Armstrong (1949) noted that diamond drilling indicated the diabasic host rock to be intruded by felsic dikes. In one or two instances, dump samples were observed to be intruded by 1 cm wide pink syenitic dikelets. Analyses*: Sample AB-86-80: <10 Au ppb, -- Ag ppm, 11.1 As ppm, ---- Cu ppm, --- Pb ppm, --- Zn ppm, -- Mo ppm. Sample AB-86-81: <10 Au ppb, -- Ag ppm, 11.1 As ppm, ---- Cu ppm, --- Pb ppm, --- Zn ppm, -- Mo ppm. Sample AB-86-82: <10 Au ppb, <1 Ag ppm, 14.7 As ppm, 24.5 Cu ppm, 422 Pb ppm, 761 Zn ppm, <5 Mo ppm. Sample AB-86-83: <10 Au ppb, -- Ag ppm, ---- As ppm, ---- Cu ppm, --- Pb ppm, --- Zn ppm, -- Mo ppm. * All assays performed by Accurassay Laboratories Ltd., Kirkland Lake.

Alteration Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Occasionally, blue (copper) staining occurs along fractures within veinlets, attesting to the presence of copper minerals here. Hydrothermal material is hosted by variably chloritic and leucoxenitic gabbro or diorite which in some cases is also crosscut by brick red hematitic fractures which locally may display marginal red altered domains (due to weak but pervasive hematitization?).
