Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - Contact between mafic volcanic rocks, to the northeast, and komatiites, to the southwest, occurs in the northern part of the pit.

Apr 15, 2016 (C Salo) - Although detailed knowledge of the bedrock geology in northeastern Hislop Township is lacking due to extensive and locally thick accumulations of glacial deposits;regional scale aspects of the area's bedrock geology have been known since the 1950's when Prest mapped Hislop and Guibord Townships. More recently, Jensen, Johnstone, Johnstone and Trowell, Jensen and Baker, Johnstone and Steele, and Troop have reevaluated the area's geology in terms of the regional stratigraphic framework of the Abitibi greenstone belt.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - The pit is developed within komatiitic 'green carbonate' rocks near the contact with mafic volcaic rocks to the northeast. The komatiitic rocks contain 2 fracture sets filled with narrow quartz veins. Sets are 360-85 and 290-70. Quartz veins are 1-2 cm wide. Iron carbonate alteration is associated withfracturing. Intensity of the alteration decreases with distance from the controlling fractures. Mafic volcanic rocks are medium to dark grey-green. Some fracturing rich in chlorite. Cubic pyrite, to 1 mm, associated with veining.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 15, 2016 (A Wilson) - 1984: Canamax Resources Inc. reported that 2 grab samples of quartz vein material obtained from the eastern outcrop (along the west side of Highway 572) averaged 7.31 and 0.96 ppm of gold.

Apr 15, 2016 (C Salo) - Knight et al. reported that where once exposed, the vein on which the No.1 shaft was sunk: a) is east striking and south 85 degrees dipping; b) ranges in thickness from a few inches to about 1 foot; c) has a sharp (faulted) northern contact; d) that a parallel system of quartz stringers occurs immediately south of the vein; e) that near the southern vein contact a 6 inch wide zone containing chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, pyrite, and flour (native) gold occurs; and f) that this anomalously sulfidic zone contained, on average, 1-2 ounce of silver per ton. The vein was reported by Knight et al. to be hosted by quartz phyric carbonate schist which was interpreted by them (on the basis of thin section petrography)to have originally been a rhyolite flow. Moore reported that east of the shaft the vein was localized along thecontact between biotite syenite (to the north) and basalt (to the south) but that west of the shaft the vein swings into a west northwest orientation and is hosted exclusively by syenite. The vein on which the No.1 shaft was sunk is no longer exposed. The Matachewan Consolidated Mines drilling apparently confirmed the presence at depth of anomalously auriferous northeast striking quartz-carbonate veinlets east of the No.1 shaft site, with the most encouraging intersection Although heavily overgrown in 1986, Moore indicated that the limited exposure observed by him near the No.2 shaft is complex geologically, consisting of intercalated dacitice (quartz phyric) volcanic rocks and variably carbonatized and fuchsitic tuffaceous horizons. This volcanic assemblage is reported by Moore to be intruded by narrow north northeast striking tongues of feldspar porphyry and narrow west northwest trending lamprophyre dikes. Because the outcrop and the trenches near the No.2 shaft are heavily overgrown, samples from the shaft waste pile were sampled and assayed by the present writer. Visible gold was observed .

Mineral Record Details

Site Visit Information

Date: Dec 15, 2000

Geologist: D Guidon

Notes: Property visited June 27, 2000 with Rob Glover. It appears that the pit was developed on or to the north of the outcrop on map 1955-5. A shaft is not located on this map and one was not looked for on the property visit. The pit is estimated to be about 30 m in diameter with the water level about 10 m below the the former bedrock surface. Quartz veins are narrow but, in places, the rock is composed of up to 30% veins. The zone with the most veining is 5-6 m wide and may strike at 140-60. Samples: 00306 - green carbonate rock with quartz vein; 00307 - mafic volcanic with disseminated pyrite and veining. Photos: 730122 - open pit; 730123 - open pit - Rob Glover looking at rocks on ramp into pit; 730124 - veining and iron-carb alteration; 730125 - veining and iron-carb alteration - boulder near road from Hwy 572; 730126 - veining and iron-carb alteration - boulder near road from Hwy 572.
