Lithology Comments

Jan 20, 2016 (A Wilson) - The Quaternary stratigraphy of hole 84-07 has evidence for two glacial advance/withdrawal sequences. Several holes of the 1984 drill program encountered at least two distinct glacial packages. In hole 84-07, the most recent (upper) glacial package extends to a depth of 27.0 m, and consists of varved clays overlying a clast supported gravel which rests directly on a subglacial till. The varved clays were deposited in proglacial lakes Barlow and Ojibway. The gravel unit, which is bisected by a layer of contorted clay and fine sand, may be reworked till or debris flows; the matrix could possibly have been washed away during drilling. The lower glacial package consists of a sequence of glaciolacustrine sand grading downward into glaciofluvial sand overlying till on bedrock. Laboratory data indicates that this till is of different origin than the upper till. The lower till has a sandier matrix, a significantly higher number of gold grains, and elevated geochemical values for the "H" fraction elements Cu, W, Sb, As, and Au. Differences in the geochemical results for the lower till and bedrock, units which are in stratigraphic contact with each other, suggest that the source of the till is not immediately up-ice from the drillhole location. Field work associated with the drillinghas indicated that the ice depositing the upper (younger) and lower tills advanced toward 170º and 240º azimuth, respectively.
