Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Geological mapping (Satterly 1952; Prest 1953; Johnstone and Trowell 1985, 1984; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone 1987; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that auriferous quartz-carbonate veins which constitute the White-Guyatt occurrence are hosted mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) turbiditic sediments of the (Archean) Porcupine Group. Local bedrock stratigraphy is southeast striking, steeply south dipping (overturned), and north facing. The veins are spatially associated with the southeast striking contact between Porcupine Group metasediments (to the southwest) and (weakly metamorphosed) southeast striking, steeply north dipping and north facing subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. Intrusive rocks in the area include narrow (generally no wider than several tens of metres) diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989), narrow (metres in width) hornblende lamprophyre dikes, and poorly known felsic dikes and masses which are exposed rarely, but which have been intersected by diamond drilling. A recent geophysical survey of Munro Township (OGS 1984) failed to detect any significant bedrock conductors to coincide with areas of known gold mineralization.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - The veins are spatially associated with the southeast striking contact between Porcupine Group metasediments (to the southwest) and (weakly metamorphosed) southeast striking, steeply north dipping and north facing subaqueously deposited tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. Most exploration (including all known underground exploration) was concentrated on the No.1 vein, located in the northern part of claim nos. 9255 and 9256. This vein system was tested by diamond drilling above the 500 foot level and strikes slightly north of east, dips steeply south to subvertically (averaging 80 degrees south) and is reported to be traceable discontinuously along about 1,600 feet (Satterly 1952). The vein is hosted by variably sericitized and Fe-dolomitized interbedded turbiditic sediments which strike 110-125, dip steeply south and face north. Satterly (1952) indicated that the No.1 vein is hosted ...in strong shear zones, or faults... (p.54). Outcrop near the No.1 vein consists of fractured and quartz veined (060 striking and subvertically dipping near the West shaft and 075 striking and subvertically dipping in the East shaft area) interbedded turbiditic wackes and argillites. No evidence of strong shearing was observed in the muck filled trenches developed along the No.1 vein or in the dump and/or muck samples from them. This suggests that rather than a zone of shear, the No.1 vein system is developed within a zone of brittle deformation.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Dump samples from the shaft area (samples AB-85-123 through AB-85- 126) indicate that the vein material on which the shaft was sunk consists of narrow (centimetre scale) quartz-Fe-dolomite and younger quartz-calcite veinlets which are mineralized with pyrite, sphalerite, and galena and which contain anomalously elevated gold tenors. The presence of 248 ppm of copper in one sample (sample AB-85-123) probably indicates that chalcopyrite is present as well. Hopkins (1915) noted that the No.1 vein contains pyrite and visible gold. Base metal assays from the No.1 vein area suggest that base metal tenors in the system are low, although Satterly (1952) noted that ...a pit...on strike from the [West] shaft, exposes quartz stringers cutting carbonatized greywacke. There is a sparse mineralization of pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, and sphalerite. (p.54). Alteration Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - The vein is hosted by variably sericitized and Fe-dolomitized interbedded turbiditic sediments which strike 110-125, dip steeply south and face north. Although sericitization of the sediments in the area appears to be ubiquitous, Fe-dolomitization appears to be directly associated with the No.1 vein (samples AB-85-115a through AB-85-121). Thin section viewing indicates that albitization may also characterize the alteration mineral assemblage which is developed marginal to the No.1 vein (samples AB-85-116 and AB-85-121).
