Lithology Comments

Apr 21, 2016 (A Wilson) - The Quaternary stratigraphy at hole 85-01 is dominated by glaciolacustrine sediments deposited in proglacial lakes Barlow and Ojibway. A 32 m interval of varved clay and silt overlies 15.6 m of fine sand with occasional clay layers. Below 47.6 m, glaciofluvial sands overlie an interval of interbedded till and sand (56.4-64.6. m) on bedrock. Some of the till beds were interpreted to have been deposited by debris flows off the ice sheet, others were deposited subglacially by the melt-out process.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 21, 2016 (A Wilson) - Interpretations of different depositional mechanisms are based on visual logging of the till core, as geochemical values for the three till samples (05,06 and 08) are similar. These three samples have elevated values, in one or all of the fractions, for the following elements: As, Sb, Cu, Ni and Co. All till beds have the same provenance. Two geochemical values of note are: 1) sample 01-05-H has an Au value of 5000 ppb in the "H" fraction reflecting the recovery of one large (275 x 400 micron) gold grain, and 2) sample 01-06-T has a W value of 42 ppm in the "T" fraction. All Quaternary sediments at hole 85-01 are associated with a single glacial package. Field work associated with the drilling has indicated that the ice depositing the till of this glacial package advanced toward 1700 azimuth. Gold grain data in Sonic Drill Hole 85-01 ranged from 100 x 200 microns (abraded) in sample 01-04 to 250 x 925 microns in sample 01-05.
