Exploration History

1939: Hollinger Mines Ltd. abandoned in overburden one 71.8 m diamond drill hole. 1945: Wilcarr Mines Ltd. completed magnetic and geological surveys and diamond drilled 2 holes totalling 396.6 m in the southwest quarter of the north half of lot 10, concession I, Wilkie Township. One of these holes intersected core lengths containing anomalous (0.01-0.02 ounce of gold per ton) gold tenors within a 32 foot core length which averaged about 0.005 ounce of gold per ton. 1965: Continental Copper Mines Ltd. diamond drilled 3 holes totalling 761 m. 1980: W.G. Wahl Ltd. completed magnetic, VLF, and HL electromagnetic surveys. 1981: Nahanni Mines Ltd. completed magnetic, VLF, and HL electromagnetic surveys and diamond drilled 2 holes totalling 580 m. The diamond drilling yielded a 2.6 m core length averaging 0.02 ounce of gold per ton, a 4.0 m core length averaging 0.02 ounce of gold per ton, and a 6.4 m core length averaging 0.02 ounce of gold per ton.

Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Prest 1952; Leahy and Ginn 1962; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Richard and McClenaghan 1985; Vagners 1984, McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988; assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) indicates that the occurrence area is underlain mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group and clastic sediments of the (Archean) Porcupine Group. Lithologies of both Groups dip steeply and strike east (as indicated by scant bedrock exposure and various electromagnetic surveys (OGS 1984, assessment files). The Pipestone Fault Zone, a regional scale structure termed the Central Branch of the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone by Johnstone (1987) and Jensen and Langford (1985) is closely associated with the Porcupine Group/Stoughton-Roquemaure Group contact. Intrusive rocks in the area include felsic bodies, small felsic intrusions associated spatially with the Pipestone Fault Zone, north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic Archean) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989), and northeast striking olivine diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Abitibi swarm.
