Access Description: A point 2.30 km north and 1.70 km east of the southwest corner of Wilkie Township. Access to the occurrence area (along and near the Shallow River where it crosses the common boundary between lots 10 and 11, in concession 2, Wilkie Township) may be made via canoe. Best access to the occurrence via motorized canoe is from the Black River, which may be reached north and east of Val Gagne from the dirt road on the common boundary between Taylor and Walker Townships. From the point where the Black River crosses the Taylor/Walker Township common boundary, proceed north via canoe about 1,200 m and proceed with caution (shallow water and surface logs are common) east up the Shallow River from the point where it flows into the Black River. An outboard motor mounted on the canoe is useable for about 2.4 km up the Shallow River, as far as the first set of rapids. A 225 m long portage around an 8 m waterfall/rapid set starts downstream (south of) the first rapids at an abandoned shack near the west river bank. Bedrock outcrop visited by the present writer is located along this portage and up river for about 1.2 km, with some outcrop reached by traversing east of the river (as indicated by Leahy and Ginn 1962).

Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Jan 26, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that the occurrence area is about 1,200 m north of the (locally) east striking Pipestone Fault Zone, which is developed at or near the contact between weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade) turbiditic sediments of the (Archean) Porcupine Group (to the south) and (weakly metamorphosed) volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton- Roquemaure Group (to the north). The volcanic rocks which host the anomalous sulfide mineralization which constitutes this occurrence are east striking, steeply north dipping, and north facing. They occupy part of the south limb of a regional scale, arcuate syncline which is north of the Pipestone Fault Zone. Intrusive rocks known to occur in the area include narrow (tens of metres in width) north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm. A recent geophysical survey of Wilkie Township detected a regional scale stratigraphy parallel anomalously conductive bedrock horizon which is spatially associated with known sulfide mineralization. Numerous detailed geophysical surveys which have been completed since the early 1960's have detected additional anomalous bedrock conductors in the area.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Samples: AB-86-260: Outcrop chip. Grey nonmagnetic white feldspar phyric felsic breccia or welded lapilli tuff. Angular white feldspar phyric fragments as large as 1 cm are supported by a weakly banded white feldspar phyric aphanitic felsic matrix. The sample has been pervasively Fe-dolomitized, contains no sulfide minerals, and may contain flattened felsic lapilli. It is probably dacitic. AB-86-261: Outcrop chip. Grey nonmagnetic incipiently sericitized argillitic arenite. Angular quartz grains are supported by a fine grained sericitic matrix which contains fine grained prisms of detrital zircon. AB-86-262: Outcrop chip obtained from submerged outcrop. Grey nonmagnetic argillitic arenite. AB-86-263: Outcrop chip. Light grey nonmagnetic pillowed amygdaloidal white feldspar phyric andesite or dacite. The sample has been incipiently Fe-dolomitized and sericitized and contains calcite-filled amygdules. AB-86-265: Outcrop chip. Weakly schistose light grey nonmagnetic quartz-sericite-carbonate. What appear to be flattened calcite filled amygdules occur andsuggest that this is an altered amygdaloidal felsic volcanic rock. AB-86-266: Outcrop chip. Grey/green nonmagnetic pillowed basalt or andesite. Black argillitic and/or carbonaceous interpillow hyaloclastite is pervasively Fe-dolomitized and may contain 1-2% of very fine grained disseminated pyrite in the carbonaceous matrix marginal to chloritic glass fragments. Note the presence of very fine grained black acicular phenocrysts (amphibole?).AB-86-268: Outcrop chip. Grey nonmagnetic weakly bedded fine grained arenaceous argillite stratigraphically overlying volcanic epiclastic breccia which overlies pillowed basalt.AB-86-271: Outcrop chip obtained 10 m along strike west of sample AB-86-270. Rusty weathering light grey felsic volcanic rock. Brecciated and recemented by Fe-dolomite.

Mineralization Comments

Jan 26, 2016 (C Salo) - Diamond drilling by various companies is reported to have intersected quartz-sulfide zones containing chalcopyrite and both massive and very fine grained disseminated cherty pyrite; pyrrhotite stringers; sphalerite stringers; sphalerite in siliceous flow tops; arsenopyrite; and galena. Assay data for the area is rarely reported, and includes diamond drill core lengths of 5, 5, and 5.5 feet which averaged 1.39% of copper and 0.02 ounce of gold per ton, 0.55% of copper and 0.01 ounce of gold per ton, and 2.31% of copper and 0.005 ounce of gold per ton (Noranda Exploration Co. hole no. 3, drilled in 1962); a 1.3 m core length of sulfidic quartz-calcite stringers which averaged 1% of zinc, 0.22 ounce of silver per ton, and 0.02% of copper (Noranda Exploration Co. hole no. W-73-6, drilled in 1972-1973); and a 1.1 m core length which averaged 0.21% of zinc (Kidd Creek Mines hole no. WI-22- 1, drilled in 1983). Asbestos veinlets as wide as 1/8 inch were intersected by the Noranda Exploration Co. diamond drilling in 1961-1962.
