Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Tectonic Assemblage: Stoughton-Roquemaure

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Apr 21, 2016 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that bedrock in the area consists mainly of sparsely exposed weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton- Roquemaure Group which strike east, dip steeply, and face north. The occurrence is near the interpreted trace of the Pipestone Fault Zone.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Samples: AB-85-01: Thin section of rhyolitic lapilli tuff from Noranda Mines Ltd. drill hole No.W-81-3A at footage 24'7in. Weakly and irregularly carbonatized and sericitized porphyritic rhyolite tuff. Subrounded and embayed to subhedral turbid plagioclase and quartz phenocrysts and irregularly shaped glassy fragments are supported by a fine grained interlocking (recrystallized)quartz-(feldspar) matrix. Albite phenocryst edges display narrow and irregular secondary feldspar growths. AB-85-02: Thin section of finely bedded rhyolitic lapilli tuff from Noranda Mines Ltd. drill hole No.W-81-3A at footage 19'6in. Subrounded to subhedral clear quartz and turbid locally glomeroporphyritic albite phenocrysts and irregularly shaped glass shards are supported by a fine grained banded matrix of interlocking (recrystallized) quartz-(feldspar). This sample contains a higher percentage of fine grained matrix than does sample AB-85-01, and displays more extensively developed sericite and carbonate alteration in the matrix. AB-85-22: Pale green massive basalt from Noranda Mines Ltd. drill hole No.W-81-3B at footage 295'2in-296'2in.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 21, 2016 (A Wilson) - Noranda Mines drill hole no. W-81-3B intersected a 1.4 foot core length of pyritic pillowed dacite cut by quartz stringers which averaged 0.01 ounce of gold per ton. Surveymin drill hole no. ER-82-1 intersected a 2.5 foot section of basalt which averaged 470 ppb of gold.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - The Noranda Mines diamond drilling intersected variably altered (chloritic, carbonate bearing, epidote bearing, silicified, sericitized, and hematized) dacite and rhyolite volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks which are locally mildly sulfidic (pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite are reported (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) in the Noranda Mines drill logs). Drill core obtained by both Surveymin and Noranda Mines is available for viewing and sampling at the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines Diamond Drill Core Storage Library, in Swastika. Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. sampled Noranda Mines hole no. W-81-3B geochemically (whole rock analyses) in 1985. Very fine grained massive basalt is reported (assessment files) to host narrow randomly oriented quartz veins containing up to 6% of combined pyrite and sphalerite. The highest reported gold assays are from Surveymin drill hole no. WR-82-1, which yielded 470 ppb of gold from a 2.5 foot core length of basalt, and from Noranda Mines drill hole no. W-81-3B, which yielded a 1.4 foot core length of pyritic quartz stringer bearing dacite which averaged 0.01 ounce of gold per ton.
