Exploration History

1965: Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. diamond drilled 2 holes totalling 236.9 m. 1979: Hollinger Mines Ltd. diamond drilled 1 hole totalling 213.7 m. 1980: Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd. diamond drilled 3 holes totalling 769.6 m. Anomalously elevated gold tenors (1.37 ppm of gold) from this drilling were yielded by a 70 cm core length of pyritic interflow sediment. 1984- 1987: Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. staked claims, completed geological, magnetic and VLF and HL electromagnetic surveys, and diamond drilled 6 holes totalling 1,864 m.

Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - No exposed bedrock occurs in this part of Wilkie Township. Geological mapping (Gupta and Johnstone 1987, Jensen and Baker 1986, Johnstone and Steele 1989, Leahy and Ginn 1962) indicates that the bedrock underlying the area consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) volcanic and interflow sedimentary or tuffaceous rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Diamond drilling in the area which was targeted on anomalous bedrock conductors as part of base and precious metals exploration programs indicate (assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) that the area is underlain by ultramafic to felsic volcanic rock and interflow horizons of variably siliceous, graphitic, tuffaceous, and clastic sedimentary material. Bedrock stratigraphy strikes northeast, dips and faces south, and forms part of the north limb of a syncline, the axis of which is near the southwest corner of Wilkie Township. The Quaternary deposits which mantle most bedrock in the area are locally thick and complex (Vagners 1984; Richard and McClenaghan 1985; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988). Virtually all diamond drilling in the area has been targeted on anomalous bedrock conductors as part of base metals exploration programs; little assay data is reported in the assessment files. Most drilled conductors appear to have been variably graphitic and/or pyritic interflow material. Chalcopyrite and sphalerite are noted (rarely) in the logs to occur with pyrite in interflow horizons and/or across narrow core widths containing pyritic quartz-carbonate veins, veinlets, and breccias. Mattagami Lake Exploration diamond drilling yielded a 70 cm long core section of pyritic interflow sediment which assayed 1.37 ppm of gold.
