Dec 07, 2015 (A Wilson) - All Quaternary sediments encountered at hole 85-59 are part of a single glacial package. Field work associated with drilling has indicated that the ice associated with this package advanced toward 170º azimuth. The 18.0m of varved clay and silt was deposited in proglacial lakes Barlow and Ojibway. Below the varved sediments are 3.9 m (18.0 to 21.9 m) of sand which was deposited in a glaciolacustrine environment, possibly on a subaqueous fan. In the interval 21.9 to 25.3m are two till units overlying bedrock. There is a distinct visual difference in texture, structure, and compactness between the till units. Laboratory data shows that the lower till unit is very clay-rich (up to 28% clay in its matrix) relative to the upper till unit. This difference is reflected in the major oxide chemistry, most noteably in CaO, CO2, andFe203 percentages. However, trace element chemistry is similar for the two till units. This similarity indicates the same or similar provenance of the till units. The differences in till texture, structure, and compactness likely results from different depositional processes. Till of the upper unit was deposited by the melt-out process. Occasional sand layers and silt stringers in the lower till unit indicates that the lower till was deposited by debris flows.
Dec 07, 2015 (A Wilson) - From the geochemical data, it is noted that: 1) in the "H" fraction, sample 02 has an Au value of 1300 ppb, reflecting the recovery of a gold grain from this sample; and 2) till samples 02 to 04 have an elevated W values in all fractions. The gold grain that was found had dimensions of 150 x 200 angstroms.
