Exploration History

1907 Victor Manson and Harry Benella make first bona fide discovery of gold in the Porcupine Area. They discovered visible gold in quartz veins cutting red aplite and rusty carbonatized rock on Gold Island in Nighthawk Lake. 1907 - 1908 50 ft. shaft sunk and small mill erected. A second shaft is noted on several maps in T-48, but the date and depth of the shaft is not known. 1919 Mr. Campbell and Mr. Fairburn completed a 50 ft. shaft on Bald Isand to the S of Gold Island and cross cut N for 50 ft. 1921-22 Night Hawk Peninsular Mines Ltd. completed 3956 ft. of diamond drilling in 20 holes. 1930 J.G. Cameron option the Gold Island Claims and shipped 2 tons of aplitic material from 2 different dikes to the Mines Branch in Ottawa for testing. 1934-35 Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. option the claims and completed a 180 ft. shaft on the south eastern tip of Nighthawk pennisula. 1940-44 Approximately 23 hole drilled by Lakefield Porcupine Mines Ltd. 1945-50 Goldhawk Porcupine Mines Ltd. dewatered the Hollinger no.1 shaft and completed 13 ft. opf crosscutting on the 170 ft. level. The Goldhawk shaft was sunke to a depth of 641 ft. with levels established at the 225, 350, 475 and 600 ft. 2438 ft. of drifitng, 1563 ft. of crosscutting 27195 ft. of surface and underground diamond drilling and a 636 ton bulk sample were completed. The bulk sample was processed at the Broulan Reef mill and in 1947 and yielded 53 ounces of gold. 1973 Property acquired by Pamour Inc. 1980 Pamour Inc. Open pit developed on main land 1960-61 McWatters Gold mines Ltd. drilled 17 holes on the Gold Island Claims. At least 2 drill holes were collared on Gold Island.
