Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Belt: Abitibi

Tectonic Assemblage: Porcupine

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Nov 30, 2015 (C Salo) - Geological mapping indicates that sparsely exposed bedrock in the occurrence area consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) turbiditic sediments and intercalated volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Porcupine Group (to the south) and volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group (to the north). Bedrock stratigraphy is east striking and steeply dipping. A regional scale fault zone, the Pipestone Fault Zone, is closely associated with the Porcupine/Stoughton-Roquemaure Group contact in the northern Stock Township area. A recent geophysical survey detected several anomalous bedrock conductors in the area.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Intermediate lava flow-unsubdivided 1 Andesite Adjacent
Claystone 2 Argillite Contains
Vein 3 Quartz Carbonate Host
Serpentinite 4 Serpentinized Footwall
Sandstone 5 Greywacke Adjacent

Lithology Comments

Nov 30, 2015 (A Wilson) - Elevated gold values are associated with sulphide minerals within quartz-carbonate veins systems hosted by variably silicified, carbonatized and graphitic sediments, tuffs and variably serpentinized ultramafic rocks associated with the Pipestone Fault.

Mineralization Comments

Nov 30, 2015 (A Wilson) - Diamond drilling by S. J. Bird returned assays of 0.13 oz./t Au over 4 ft.; 0.18 oz./t Au over 5 ft. and 0.24 oz./t Au over 3.2 ft. Diamond drill hole No. 4 yielded auriferous arsenopyrite-pyrite mineralization within clastic metasdiments. Diamond drill hole ST-81-1 returned assays up to 1825 ppb Au.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Diamond drilling by S.J. Bird in 1949 and, more recently, by Nahanni Mines in 1981 encountered anomalous (greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton) gold tenors associated with pyrite, (locally 'bedded') arsenopyrite, and pyrite-arsenopyrite associated with quartz-carbonate vein systems hosted by variably silicified, carbonatized, and graphitic sediments, tuffs, and variably serpentinized ultramafic rocks which are spatially associated with the Pipestone Fault Zone (assessment files). The gold mineralization encountered is similar to that delineated by Clavos Porcupine Mines Ltd./Canamax Resources Inc./Bruneau Mining Corp. at the Clavos deposit, located within the Pipestone Fault Zone about 2.8 km west of the Bird occurrence.
