Exploration History

1963: Texas Gulf Sulphur Company carried out drilling. The deposit was discovered in drill hole K-55-1. The mine started production in 1966 from an open pit. The orebody is now mined at depth through three shafts as the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 Mines. 1981: National Elf of France bought Texas Gulf and then immediately sold the Kidd Creek property to the Canada Development Corporation. 1986: Falconbridge acquired the property.

Diorite 1 Diorite Intrudes
Felsic lava flow-unsubdivided 2 Rhyolite Volcanoclastic Contains
Intermediate lava flow-unsubdivided 3 Dacite Adjacent
Quartz Porphyry 4 Quartz Hanging Wall

Lithology Comments

Dec 18, 2020 (Therese Pettigrew) - The upper Kidd–Munro assemblage is host to the giant Kidd Creek Mine, associated with high-silica rhyolites and ultramafic volcanic rocks. Komatiites comprise the footwall to the Kidd Creek deposit and are overlain by the lowermost high-silica rhyolite which hosts the deposit (Houle et al., 2008).

Dec 04, 2015 (A Wilson) - Level 3800 exploration drilling returned intersections of: 5140 ppm Zn, 3 ppm Pb, 59 ppm Cu 0.3 g/t Ag over 1 m; 29900 ppm Zn, 1320 ppm Pb, 214 ppm Cu, 13.3 g/t Ag over 1 m and 2000 ppm Zn, 210 ppm Pb, 38 ppm Cu, 9.6 g/t Ag over 1 m in DDH 7516; 11500 ppm Zn, 2660 ppm Pb, 27 ppm Cu, 25.3 g/t Ag over 1 m; 44400 ppm Zn, 680 ppm Pb, 60 ppm Cu, 703 g/t Ag over 1 m and 10000 ppm Zn, 3250 ppm Pb, 87 ppm Cu, 15.5 g/t Ag over 1 m in DDH 7531; 23900 ppm Zn, 404 ppm Pb, 132 ppm Cu, 28.7 g/t Ag over 1 m; 20000 ppm Zn, 197 ppm Pb, 86 ppm Cu, 11.3 g/t Ag over 1 m and 13400 ppm Zn, 119 ppm Pb, 163 ppm Cu, 1.9 g/t Ag over 1 m in DDH 7541.

Dec 18, 2020 (Therese Pettigrew) - Kidd Creek is based on a rich, steeply dipping volcanogenic sulphide deposit located in the Archaean Abitibi greenstone belt. There are two major orebodies, with associated smaller lenses. The ore is hosted in felsic rocks of the Kidd Volcanic Complex and is cut by mafic sills and dykes. Structural deformation resulting from several phases of folding and faulting affects the distribution of sulphide lenses. Three ore types predominate: massive, banded and bedded (MBB) ores (pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrrhotite); breccia ores containing fragments of the MBB ores; and stringer ores consisting of irregular chalcopyrite stringers cutting a siliceous volcaniclastic host (Houle et al., 2008).

Jan 08, 2024 (Sheree Hinz) - Zinc concentrate had an average of 270 ppm In, and annual indium production was 50 tonnes of In metal before the closure of a smelter in Timmins, Ontario in 2010 (Paradis, 2015). Gemmell (2013) reports sphalerite-chalcopyrite ores at the base of the West and Main lenses contain up to 1040 ppm Se and 249 ppm In. The Cu-rich stringer zone contains up to 204 ppm Se and 187 ppm In, similar to the upper mine. The selenium is contained in most sulfides but mainly in chalcopyrite and galena. Indium occurs mainly in roquesite, both associated with the Zn-rich and Cu-rich component of the ores.
