Access Description: The mine is located some 70km west-southwest of Timmins and easy access is possible via Highway 101 to the mine turn-off. From this turn-off the mine road goes south for 2km to the abandoned pit.



Exploration History

1947: The first reported work in the immediate area of the ultramafics was carried out by Pen-Star and Pen-More Syndicates and consisted of geophysical and geological work carried out as a guide to prospecting for sulphide deposits. 1950: Asbestos was discovered by J.C Bromley while prospecting. 1951: The property was acquired by Johns Manville who started an exploration program in the following year. This exploration program which continued for over twenty years consisted of geological mapping, magnetic, electromagnetic surveys and diamond drilling was centred on the Reeves Mine but did cover a number of other asbestos showings in the area. Diamond drilling on the main prospect totalled 8,031m in 1952 and 4,370m in 1953. 1964: Underground exploration started and bulk samples were collected from surface and underground. These samples totalling 8,380 tonnes in 1964 and 1,878 tonnes in 1965 (8,248 tons and 1,848 tons) were processed at the Munro Mine. 1966: Overburden stripping and site preparation began. 1968: The Reeves Mine started production. 1975: mine closes because of uncontrollable dust conditions in the mill. 2010: Rio Tinto Minerals / Luzenac Inc. – EM, Mag.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - The ultramafic host rock has been folded and the axes plunge steeply to the northwest. Mention has been made that mineralization is associated with reverse faults trending 120 deg and dip at less than 45deg north.


Oct 21, 2014 (A Wilson) - Ayer indicates that the ore body is situated within the northern part of a differentiated ultramafic to gabbroic body 120 to 300 m thick. The ore zones occur in serpentinized dunite in the northern closure of an antiformal structure which plunges about 50 degrees to the northeast. The orebody is enclosed to the west, north and east by about 30 m of barren serpentinite in contact with mafic metavolcanic rocks. The ore is typically a moderately carbonatized medium-grained serpentinite with magnetite concentrated in shears. South of the fault the rock is a coarse grained carbonatized serpentinite. Secondary serpentinization and dolomite alteration occurs along fractures with some poor quality asbestos.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - The deposit is located in compositionally layered ultramafic rocks which may be part of an intrusive plug or a thicken sequence of komatiitic flows in the nose of a fold. Else where these flows or lenses are conformable with some Mg tholeiitic flows in a thick sequence of mafic metavolcanics. Originally these ultramafic rocks were divided into early and late ultramafic intrusives by Milne 1972 but the occurrence of compositionally controlled spinifex texture (Pine needle or chicken track texture) was noted in settings now regarded as characteristic of layered komatiite flows. Except for the southern boundary, the orebody is surrounded by barren, fine grained serpentinite which is weekly carbonatized and derived from a dunite. This is in contact with Mg Tholeiitic metavolcanics. Locally the contact between ore and waste is marked by shearing and / or off white tremolite - carbonate alteration. The ore is typically a moderately carbonatized, medium grained serpentinite with magnetite concentrated in shears. Locally the carbonate alteration imparts a pale green colour to the rock. Immediately north of the southern faulted contact the ore is highly contorted and carbonatized. South of the fault the rock is a coarse grained carbonatized serpentinite. Secondary serpentinization (lizardite) and dolomite alteration occurs along fractures with some poor quality asbestos. Further south the extent of carbonatization and serpentinization alteration diminishes. In addition to the fibrous form, ortho chrysotile also occurs in two other forms, firstly coarse grained, brittle chrysotile prisms occurs in veins up to 20cm thick and secondly narrow veins of very fine grained, compact apple green chrysotile.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - Asbestos fibre veins (chrysotile) are associated with magnetite in thin seams in the centre of a composite vein or along the margin of a simple single vein. Locally, up to eleven separate though adjacent asbestos veins can occur in a single composite vein. Commonly these larger veins are mantled by swarms of thin gash veins with fibres oblique to the vein. The asbestos mineralization occurs in two zones separated by a diabase dyke. In these zones there is a complex network of veins of various ages. Fibre veins are more continuous in the east zone but this is not the case in the west zone which consequently has erratic grades. Highly mineralized areas are marked by the occurrence of gash veins between the larger veins which improves the over all grade of the ore. Average grade of the ore is 2.5 to 3% asbestos with 4% being the richest. Most fibres are less than 5mm but some material up to 15mm occurs. No information on the quality is available but the bulk of the production was used in asbestos cement and asphalt.

Notes: In the company of Marc Leroux of the MNDM a visit was made of the old pit and mill at the Reeves Mine. The west pit is full of water and is used as a tailings pond for the Penhorwood Talc operation. Around the margins of the pit no mineralization was noted, presumably because the original pit was taken back a considerable distance from the ore zones. The mill has been stripped of all mechanical equipment and a number of the buildings have been partially demolished. It would also appear that a scrap salvage program was left uncompleted. Large amounts of material have been removed from the reject pile presumably for construction purposes.
