Access Description: The prospect is located 65km west-southwest of Timmins and easy access is possible via Highway 101 to the Reeves Mine turn-off. From the highway the road goes 4km south passing the old mill at the Reeves Mine and the new talc mill and open pit.

Exploration History

1951 Asbestos was discovered to the northeast by J.C. Bromley while prospecting in the vicinity of the Reeves Mine. 1951 The property was acquired by Johns Manville who started an exploration program in the following year. This exploration program continued for over twenty years consisted of geological mapping, magnetic, electromagnetic surveys and diamond drilling. Though this program was centred on the Reeves Mine outlying areas were also covered. This occurrence outcrops and was found by geological mapping and prospecting though insufficient work was done to specify dimensions or grade.

Geology Comments

Feb 29, 2016 (S Fumerton) - To the west of the occurrence there is a northeast trending shear zone with associated with extensive and intense alteration. At the eastern outcrop of the occurrence there are some fractures but no evidence of this northeastern striking shear.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Ultramafic lava flow-unsubdivided 1 Komatiite Serpentinite Host
Serpentinite 2 Serpentinite Host

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - The prospect is located in compositionally layered ultramafic rocks which may be part of an intrusive plug or a thickened sequence of komatiitic flows in the nose of a fold. Else where these flows or lenses are conformable with Mg tholeiitic and calc-alkaline flows. Originally these ultramafics were divided into early and late ultramafic intrusives by Milne 1972 but the occurrence of compositionally controlled spinifex texture was noted in settings now regarded as characteristic of layered komatiitic flows. The eastern outcrop for this occurrence is a highly altered ultramafic with a rusty to off white colour on both the weathered and fresh surfaces.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - In outcrop there are a number of thin (<1cm) magnetite veins which have minor amounts of short asbestos fibre. Apparently this mineralization has been drill tested but with unknown results.

Site Visit Information

Date: Jun 28, 1992

Geologist: S Fumerton

Notes: A search was made for both outcrops mentioned by Milne (1972) and only the larger eastern one was found. To the west the ground is covered with a cedar swamp upon which a new grid has been cut in order to do exploration prior to expanding the Penhorwood Talc pit.
