Exploration History

1950 First reported by V.K. Prest in Ontario Department of Mines annual report 59, Vol 49, part 7, Geology of Keith-Muskego Townships Area as a small of iron formation south of Slate Rock Lake. 1964-66 The Keevil Mining Group Ltd. held 32 contiguous claims in the west corner of Muskego and Keith Townships and the southeastern corner of Foleyet Township. Keevil Mining conducted a magnetic and electromagnetic survey over the property as well as a geologic mapping program. Keevil Mining Group Ltd. subsequently drilled two holes into two separate conductors outlined in their previous geophysical survey. 1971 Noranda Exploration conducted an electromagnetic and magnetic survey over an area which included the occurrence. The survey revealed several conductors of varying strength. 1982 Geosearch consultants Ltd. conducted an electromagnetic and magnetic survey over the claim group for Dome Exploration. 1983 Dome exploration conducted a follow up drill program in the area of the southern Muskego boundary and the northern portion of Keith Township. One hole, 182-1, is believed to have been drilled in the vicinity of the iron formation but the log has not been filed for assessment. 1987 Aerodat Limited flew a combined helecopter airborne electromagnetic and magnetic survey for B.P. Resources over the area that includes Muskego and Slate Rock Lakes. 1991 Falconbridge Exploration conducts a ground electromagnetic and magnetic survey in an area to the west of Slate Rock Lake in northern Keith Township.

Geologist: K Houle

Notes: Small exposure of iron formation is on the east side of diabase dyke. Very lean magnetite cherty iron formation. Weakly banded chert and partially silicified epiclastic sediments with < 10% finely disseminated magnetite. Only traces of sulphides were observed. Iron formation is well folded into open S-folds proximal to diabase. This unit is believed to be, or on strike with, what was originally referred to as the Slate Lake Iron Occurrence. A drill hole, Dome 182-1 (1983), was located about 300m to the northwest, UTM 17 398760 5336594. Although no drill log is available, from the south direction of drilling, it is believed that the drill target may have been a geophysical anomaly associated with this iron formation.
