Resident Geologist District: Timmins

NTS Grid: 42B01NW

Point Location Description: Diamond drill hole K1 drilled by Kukatush Mining Corp.

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: As the occurrence is long, the access to the eastern end is easy with a kilometre traverse north of the Joburke gold mine which in turn has easy access from Highway 101 via the Horwood access road. The central and western parts are best accessed via an exploration trail extending west from the Joburke mine.

Exploration History

1958 Kukatush Mining Corp extended their iron exploration program westwards from Radio Hill in order to investigate iron formation occurrences noted in earlier government surveys. The program initially consisted of a reconnaissance dip needle survey followed by a ground magnetic survey along 8km of strike west from MacKeith Lake. Based on this survey the potential for iron ore was estimated to be 15 million tonnes per 30m. 1962 Kukatush Mining resumed exploration with a small drill program to follow up on earlier work. This work indicated that numerous narrow bands of oxide and carbonate iron formation occur within several larger packages. 1972 Dome Exploration Canada – AMag. 1987 Gail Resources – AEM, AMag.

Lithology Comments

Apr 07, 2015 (S Fumerton) - A major series of banded iron formation horizons extend some 15km from Keith Township in the west to Penhorwood Township in the east. To the east the iron potential has been investigated in the southern horizon at the Groundhog River and at Radio Hill. In this case, the northern horizon has been evaluated. The banded iron formation is intercalated with mafic volcanic flows and fine grained arenites in a sequence that tops to the north. This sequence is cut by a number of diorite dykes. The iron formation is finely laminated on a centimetre scale and consists of alternating bands of chert, magnetite, and chlorite plus amphibole. The amphibolite horizons are primarily composed of tremolite with some hornblende and chlorite. Locally the amphibole phases are composed of massive riebeckite. Hematite occurs along slip planes.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 07, 2015 (S Fumerton) - Fine to coarse grained massive magnetite occurs in thin seams up to one centimetre thick. These magnetite bearing phases are intercalated with siliceous phases containing pyrite and pyrrhotite and amphibolite phases. Within the chert phases there is some carbonate probably siderite that increases the determined soluble iron content above the determined magnetite abundance.

Apr 07, 2015 (P Bousquet) - Hole K-1 returned assays varying from 27.4% soluble Fe to 31.68% soluble Fe on widths from 4.5 to 10 ft (T-174).
