Exploration History

1990: Two prospectors, Dennis Morin and George Ross, staked an area based on results of a recent government airborne magnetic and EM survey. During prospecting the ground a fragmental sulphide horizon was exposed. Follow-up work consisted of a ground magnetic and VLF electromagnetic survey. Extensive sampling was carried out on the property during a number of property visits by Placer Dome, BHP, Rio Algom, Granges, Cominco, Noranda, Falconbridge and Asarco. During this sampling the best results were up to 0.4% Cu and 3.2% Zn. 1990: Asarco Exploration optioned the property and carried out a geological mapping program which was followed up with a diamond drill program in the beginning of the new year. This drilling traced the mineralization over a 1000 m strike length but the intersected mineralization was typically low grade.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - Mineralization occurs in the lower part of a sequence dominated by pillowed, Fe tholeiitic basalts intercalated with feldspar megacrystic, tuffaceous horizons (? crystal tuffs), and lapilli tuffs. Within this sequence are a number talc - carbonate units which may be derived from komatiites together with numerous feldspar porphyries. In the lower part of the sequence there are a number of wacke and chert garnet horizons in close proximity to the mineralized horizons. Within this lower part of the sequence, there are a number of closely spaced, mineralized, banded iron formations up to 2m thick with thin chert lamellae. At variable distances from the mineralized horizons, and locally in contact with the mineralized horizons is a large granitic pluton. Where the banded iron formations are within the contact metamorphic aureole of this pluton, both the chert lamelli and the sulphide horizons have recrystallized to a coarser grain size.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - Mineralization occurs in a fragmental unit with recrystallized chert clasts set in a fine mafic matric with contorted, discontinuous trails of medium grained pyrrhotite. This fragmental unit is a soft sedimentary breccia with the chert lamelli forming clasts set in a sulphide matrix. Pyrrhotite forms up to 25% of the matrix and locally there is up to 2% sphalerite and chalcopyrite in the matrix in lenticular aggregates. The mineralized horizon exposed in the trench, appears to be a distal sedimentary mineralized phase within a sulphide facies iron formation.

Site Visit Information

Date: Oct 22, 1990

Geologist: J Ireland

Notes: The writer visited a new base metal occurrence in east central Horwood Twp at the invitation of the property holders, Messrs F. Ross, G. Ross, D. Morin and R. Denommee. The main showing is located on unpatented mining claim P.1158341 and is exposed on surface as a prominent gossan zone flanking a small ridge on the south east side of the road. The mineralized zone strikes 040 - 045 deg and dips approximately 40 deg NW. It is exposed for approximately 100m along strike, covered by overburden to the northeast and large piles of newly cut timber to the southwest. Initial estimates of true width vary from 8 to 12m, as the northwest contact of the zone is not exposed on surface. The southeast contact is only exposed in one location and the footwall rock is foliated biotite granite. The gossan cap is extensive and fresh mineralization is confined to a recently blasted trench. At the top of the trench, near the footwall contact, pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite make up the matrix of a recrystallized siliceous fragmental unit; possibly a chert or tuff breccia. The unit grades rapidly into a coarser hetrolithic breccia composed of recrystallized siliceous fragments and darker intermediate to siliceous fragments. Pyrrhotite, graphite and chalcopyrite with minor sphalerite make up the matrix of the hetrolithic breccia. Average sulphide content of the fragmental units is 35 - 45%. At the base of the trench, a 40cm wide felsite dike is exposed cutting the mineralized unit. A quartz 'sweat' at the contact of this unit contains significant sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Hangingwall rocks exposed are partially amphibolitized mafic flows cut by numerous quartz veins and sweats that are variably mineralized with pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. [ PRECIS ]

Date: Jan 31, 1991

Geologist: D Farrow

Notes: In company with P.J. Sangster, staff geologist the Aquarious mine site was visited for the purpose of viewing diamond drill core from the Hardiman Bay property in Horwood Township. Asarco project geologist John Reddick and staff geologist were on hand to conduct the tour and made drill logs, sections and core available for inspection and discussed possible depositional models. Assays were not available. Six holes have been drilled along a 1000m strike length all of which intersected a sulphide zone. Although the mineralization is at this stage non-economic in nature, indications of proximity to a) an exhalative vent or b) a depositional basin may provide impetus for further exploration drilling. Geologist: S Fumerton

Notes: An examination of known mineralization and the main trench was made together with a reconnaissance of the surrounding rocks to the west.
