Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Compositional and structural patterns define four zones in the Shawmere Anorthosite Complex. There is a border zone of foliated garnetiferous amphibolites, a banded mafic and and anorthositic zone with know anorthosite horizons of 1 cm to 1 m width, and a more massive anorthosite zone and acoarse megacrystic gabbroic anorthosie to gabbro. Boundaries are transitional, with exposure contining more than one rock type. The Shawmere Anorthosite complex is hosted by the Kapuskasing Structural Zone.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The rock is a very coarse-grained anorthosite with 1-4 mm grains and very locally, there are porphyroblasts up to 30 mm through more typical prophyroblasts are up to 10 mm in size. These prophyroblasts are very irregular, poikiloblastic and scattered throughout the rock. The grains in the matrix are equant and may be polygonized.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Based on the anhydrous normative mineralogy, the rock varies between 19 and 29% albite, 66 and 78% Anorthite and less than 0.5% each for orthoclase and quartz. The plagioclase normative mineralogy appears to be bimodal at either extremes of the compositional range. Normative anhydrous mafic mineral from between 2 and 5% of the rock and consist of diopside, hematite, hypersthene, olivine, sphene and perovskite. One drill hole drilled by Purechem returned consistently good results of 30.92 wt% Al and 1.38 wt% Fe. Analysis conducted in 2001 returned Al2O3 values ranging from 31.2% to 32.0%. The +200 mesh returned an average value of 32.2% Al2O3.
