Access Description: The iron range is located in central Corbiere Township. It forms a ridge up to 250 feet high that decreases in height eastwartd to approximately 15 ft above local lake level. It can be accessed by a 6 km overland traverse from the junction of the railway line and the Hawk Junction road. The iron range is more easily accessible by float plane or helicopter from Wawa.

Exploration History

In 1912, E. L. Goodwin reported that Lake Superior Corporation (future Algoma Steel Corporation Limited) compled 14 trenches and identified two small siderite bodies. In 1949, the Jalore Mining Company Limited completed 10 short diamond drill holes (570.5 feet). No additional work has been completed.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Central Brooks Iron Range is part of the Michipicoten Iron Range that occurs between the cycle one intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks and the overlying cycle two mafic metavolcanic rocks of the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt. North of the range, the rocks consist of sericite schist and intermediate to felsic tuffs. South of the range, the rocks consist of intermediate to mafic massive and pillowed metavolcanic rocks. The range is subvertically dipping and cut off to the east by the Marsden Fault. To the west, the iron range pinches out at an unnamed lake. The range is estimated to be over 5,000 feet in strike length and averages 200 feet in width.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron formation has been described as massive to brecciated silica with minor amounts of magnetite, pyrite and siderite. Local areas of siliceous siderite are found along the north side of the iron range and within the iron formation. The Central Brooks Iron Range is interpreted to be the in-folded extension of the Josephine-Bartlett Iron Range which became detached during the formation of the Centre Anticline. Siliceous siderite has been observed on the north side of the iron range, and cherty iron formation to the south.
