Exploration History

1912: Mapping by E. L. Goodwin for the Lake Superior Corporation (Algoma Steel Corporation Ltd.). The range is subdivided into three sections No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. East Brooks Iron Range is equivalent to Goodwin's No. 1. Trenching of the iron range completed in 21 locations. 1950: Jalore Mining Company Limited completed a program of mapping, sampling and diamond drilling ( 18 holes - 7850.5 ft). Unit subdivided into Section A and Section B. Some anomalous copper values were reported from the drill core.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The East Brooks Iron Range is one of the 32 separate iron ranges that constitute the Michipicoten Iron Formation. It consitutes the break between cycle one and cycle two volcanism. To the south lie intermedicate to felsic quartz-feldspar crystal tuffs, sericite schists, feldspar crystal tuffs and bedded tuffs interbedded with intermediate to mafic schists, flows and tuffs. North of the iron range lies a thick sequence of massive and pillowed intermediate to mafic metavolcanic rocks.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Ironstone-unsubdivided 1 Chert-Siderite Host
Mafic Schist 2 Schist Footwall
Intermediate Tuff 3 Tuff Footwall
Mafic lava flow-unsubdivided 4 Pillowed To Massive Hanging Wall

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron formation consists of massive to banded chert along the north side with a siderite-pyrite zone along the south side. The siderite-pyrite zone is highly variable in width along strike and locally pinches out. Rocks enclosing the iron range are schistose and carbonated. The chloritoid that is commonly observed elsewhere in the township is not present near the East Brooks Range.
