Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron range is part of the Michipicoten Iron Formation. It lies at the contact of intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks of cycle one and intermediate to mafic metavolcanic rocks of cycle two. The range occurs on the south limb of the Centre Anticline and has likely undergone considerabel deformation during folding and possible overturning.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Carbonate Ironstone 1 Carbonate Host
Intermediate Tuff 2 Tuff, Massive Hanging Wall
Intermediate Tuff 3 Intermediate To Felsic Tuff And Schist Footwall

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - On the north side intermediate to felsic rocks are present consisting of breccia with chloritic matrix, sericite schist, lapilli tuff, tuff and quartz-feldspar crystal tuff. On the south side, the rocks are massive to pillowed intermediate to mafic metavolcnaci rocks. Facing data indicate that the stratigraphy is south-facing. The iron formation has been described as fine-grained, interedded, white and grey silica and siliceous buff coloured siderite. Siderite and pyrite occur in bands 1 inch to 2 feet in width.

Alteration Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Carbonate alteration is intense, particularly in those areas where the rocks are schistose. In some locations to the west of the iron range, chloritoid porphyroblasts are common in rocks of both mafic and felsic composition.
