Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Holdsworth iron range has been tentatively correlated with the Kathleen Iron Range. It may represent a section of the Kathleen that has been thrust up and over the Kathleen. They cap subcycle one volcanism and mark the beginning of cycle one volcanism. The iron range is not exposed in outcrop. The original discovery was described by prospectors as black sand.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Sulphide Ironstone 1 Massive Sulphide Host
Intermediate pillowed flow 2 Intermediate To Mafic Pillowed To Massive Hanging Wall
Intermediate Schist 3 Intermediate To Felsic Footwall

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Intermediate to felsic sericite schists are found along the south side of the iron range. Along the north side the iron range is in contact with intermediate to mafic massive and pillowed metavolcanic rocks. The stratigraphy is north-facing. This iron formation lacks a carbonate facies but locally has a massive sulphied base. The upper portion of the iron formation consists of thinly bedded chert and magnetite with minor sulphide.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron formation has been examined for pyrite/sulphur. Pyrite horizons have sharp contacts with the metavolcanic rocks and thin bands of metavolcanic rocks occur within the pyrite. Two drill holes completed by Falconbridge returned assays anomalous in gold and Zn (OR-4: between 104.4 and 106.0 m returned a value of 4000 ppb Au and 0.35% Zn from felsic tuff).
