Primary Commodities: Hematite (Gemstones)

Location

Township or Area: McMurray

Latitude: 48° 0' 3.1"    Longitude: -84° 40' 10.76"

UTM Zone: 16    Easting: 673825.34   Northing: 5319023.6    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Sault Ste. Marie

NTS Grid: 42C02SE

Point Location Description: Claim 3254 mp 36a

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: The claims were situated, east of Blasko Lake, on the trail leading from Dycies Farm to Shook Lake. Presumably the showing is near the iron formation float noted in the NE corner of map P2441. By taking the Firesand Creek road south from highway 101 for approximately 1 km, the visitor should be in the vicinity of the showing.

Exploration History

Hematite float discovered by A. Gibson in the fall of 1922. By 1924, the area had been trenched and 3 drill holes (186 ft) had been completed. Most trenching was completed on claims SSM 3263 AND 3262. Incomplete drill logs have been retained from this work. 1951-1958 Algoma Ore Properties completed diamond drilling, geological mapping and dip needle surveys of the area.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The complex intrudes Archean rocks of the Wawa subprovince and has been emplaced along faults associated with the Kapuskasing Structural Zone. The complex consists of sovite, silicocarbonatite, ijolite and feruginous rauhaugite. The complex is zoned with sovite and silicocarbonatite at the periphery and rauhaugite in the core. Ijolite occurs as blocks metasomatized by fenitizing fluids in the sovite rim of the complex. Lamprophyre dikes with associated iron carbonate and sodium amphibole alteration are common in the area near the complex. The occurrence is presumably the deep hematitic alteration observed in the ferruginous dolomitic (rauhaugite) core of the complex.

Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Dolomite-Carbonatite 1 Rauhaugite Host

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The occurrence has been reported to be a band of dolomitic rock. The carbonate has been weathered and a shallow layer of soft hematite covers the iron-bearing carbonates below. Descriptions of the occurrence include reference to carbonate rhombs. The occurrence could also have been hosted within an exposure of ferruginous sovite.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Analysis for the total iron content of the ferruginous dolomite showed 6.96% Fe and 0.77% Mg. Other iron assays from fresh drill core returned iron values of 25.60%. Samples of oxidized material across 17 feet on the surface returned values of 55.5% Fe.
