Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Southern Zone of the East Pukaskwa Deformation Zone (EPDZ) is approximately 4 km in length by 500 m in width. It lies along the contact between hanging wall metasediments and footwall metavolcanics. Individual shear zones are present not only at the contact of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks, but also within the metavolcanic sequence where there is a competency contrast between units. A well developed penetrative foliation in this zone strikes 240, dips steeply to the north and locally forms tectonic layering. Folding is prevalent in this zone. Tight folds, with wavelengths up to 2 m and amplitudes up to 60 cm, exhibit a symmetric axial planar crenulation cleavage.
