Point Location Description: Group of outcrops east of Mud Lake

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: The intrusion is accessible via the new Goudreau Road. Follow the New Goudreau Road for approsimately 6 km southeast of the intersection with the Dubreuilville Road. There are several outcrops of nepheline syenite exposed along the roadside. Alternatively, a disused bush road can be followed south of the Goudreau Road and access can be made to the outcrops near Mud Lake. Outcrops of the associated gabbro and diorite are accessible from Herman Lake.

Exploration History

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Herman Lake Syenite Complex is bound on the north and south by intermediate to mafic metavolcanic roks. At the west end of the complex, some deformed intermediate to mafic metavolcanic rocks may separate the intrusion from the north striking McVeigh Creek fault which passes through the deeper part of Herman Lake. No extrusive equivalents to the Herman Lake Stock have been identified to date.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - There are few outcrops of the complex available for investigation. Boulders of the nepheline cancrinitic syenite are found as far south as the Lucy Iron Range east of Wawa. The dominant units mapped in the complex consist of a medium to carse grained nepheline cancrinite syenite, a fine to medium grained aegerine-augite syenite and a quartz syenite. The quartz syenite is believed to be more closely related in origin to the Maskinonge Lake Stock to the east. A few isolated outcrops of melanocratic nepheline syenite or ijolite have been observed in the northeastern part of the complex. The complex is cut by a suite of NW trending diabase dikes and a much less common set of NE trending dikes.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Samples collected by ALgoma Ore returned values of 18.87% alumina and 20.00% alumina. These values were determined to be too low for any ceramic application. Samples collected by the ODM in 1927 returned values of 18.84% alumina and 20.76% alumina. Samples of the nepheline syenite colleced by the OGS in 1993 returned values ranging from 20.2% alumina to 22.5% alumina.
