Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron range is composed of 5 distinct southeast striking bands of iron formation. East of the highway, the stratigraphic equivalent package consists only of 2 major iron formations suggesting that there has been stratigraphic repetition of the units. The Brant Lake Iron Range is the western extension of the Dreany Iron Range and is stratigraphically younger than other ranges in the Kabenung Lake area.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Magnetite Ironstone 1 Magnetite-Facies Host
Terrigenous-Clastic-Unsubdivided 2 Wacke Hanging Wall
Intermediate lava flow-unsubdivided 3 Footwall

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron formation consists of laminated to bedded chert and magnetite. Reports vary, but up to six parallel, south facing, steeply dipping bands of iron formation have been found. It commonly outcrops along low iron-stained ridges. The iron formation lies within metasedimentary rocks, just above the contact with intermediate to mafic metavolcanic rocks.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Analysis of samples collected in 1902 returned 42%-49% Fe and 25-39% Si. Assays from the iron formation collected in 1910 returned iron values ranging from 41.7% to 50.44%. Assays from the 1911 diamond drilling returned iron values ranging from 28.56% to 43.14%. In 1957 low-grade samples containing 20.7% Fe were beneficiated to a concentrate containing 51.77% Fe. In 1966 a 55 lb sample of ore assaying 43.5% Fe was concentrated to 63% Fe.
