Exploration History

1900: staking by T. Godin. 1901-03: Algoma Commercial Company- shaft sunk to 56 feet, 3 ddh, operations suspended in 1903, second shaft sunk to 20 feet but abandoned; 5 ton mill run of ore sampled. No 3 shaft interpreted to be about 30-40 ft. deep. No. 1 shaft sunk on footwall to Godon Vein (30-40 ft. deep), No. 2 shaft sunk in hanging wall (depth about 56 ft.). Sporadic property visits and reports from 1904-1944 made by various Algoma Steel representatives. A 1932 report indicates that Noranda sampled the vein sometime previous to that date. 1944-45: Algoma Ore Properties - property acquisition, a total of 4 shafts found over 1097 m extent, trenching,, 38 ddh. 1974: R. Campbell - trenching and stripping. 1991: J Gerdes - prospecting.

Geology Comments

Sep 23, 2016 (A Wilson) - The Emily Bay Deformation Zone (EBDZ) is located on the west side of Dog Lake in southern Riggs Township. The EBDZ is a 500 m wide, east-northeast trending zone of intense ductile shearing and weakly to strongly strained rocks. The EBDZ can be traced up to 4 km to the southwest of Dog Lake but cannot be traced to the eastern side of Dog Lake. The EBDZ is localized within massive to pillowed mafic metavolcanic rocks that are deformed to chlorite-calcite and chlorite-iron carbonate schists within several discrete ductile shear zones. These shear zones are NE-trending and vary in width from 1 m to greater than 30 m. A second set of narrow, brittle to ductile, NW-trending shear zones is observed in the vicinity of this showing.

Lithology Comments

Sep 23, 2016 (A Wilson) - Two principal veins occur along the contacts between greenstone and felsite. The Godon Vein lies on the westerly contact and the Shipley Vein (No. 1 vein) is on the easterly contact. The Godon Vein consists of quartz with stringers of chlorite, all well mineralized with pyrite. The footwall is intensely sheared greenstone. The Shipley or No 1 Vein is less clearly defined than the Godon Vein All work on the vein was done on a well-mineralized shear zone at the contact between the porphyry and the greenstone.

Mineralization Comments

Sep 23, 2016 (A Wilson) - A mill test of 4.25 tons of ore gave a recovery of $30.16 per ton (gold at $20.67 per ounce); and $18.00 per ton was left in a concentrate and in the tailings. These analyses gave a total gold content of the vein as $48.16 Au/t. The gold brick from the 1901 mill run was valued at $143.29 Au. Samples taken in 1918 by G. W. MacLeod across a width of 3 feet gave $44.00 per ton. Channel samples collected by Noranda returned assays ranging from nil to $1.20 over 2.5 ft. Grab samples collected by Willmott (Algoma Commercial Company) returned assays of $211.20 Au from the discovery site. Samples from trenches on the same vein returned assays of $19.15 and $11.13 Au. Samples of drill core collected in 1944 returned assays ranging from 0.01 oz./t Au to 0.25 oz./t Au. A grab sample taken from the #4 shaft area by Algoma Steel in 1981 returned an assay of 0.008oz/t Au, 3.1 oz./t Ag, 3280 ppm Cu, 24 ppm Pb, 3980 ppm Zn, 113 ppm Co, 102 ppm Ni. Assays from the Shipley Vein returned values ranging from $0.06 to $2556.00 Au. (1902 sampling).
