Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The iron formation near Goudreau has been subdivided into numerous individual segments which were once presumably a single iron formation that has been folded and faulted. The pyrite bodies near Goudreau average 30 feet in thickness, but locally may be 100 feet thick with pyrrhotite and magnetite composing up to 10% of the sulphide unit. The main difference between the iron formation exposed in the Goudreau area and that exposed north of Wawa is that the siderite in the carbonate facies at Wawa is replaced by calcite east of the town of Goudreau. The occurrence lies within the northern domain of the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This domain is located immediately south of the Maskinonge Lake sock and is composed of brittle to brittle-ductile high-strain zones.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Bear Iron Range is probably a tightly folded segment of the Goudreau pyrite range. Within the pit, the iron formation appears to lie on top of the felsic/intermediate metavolcanics. The iron formation is enclosed within intermediate to felsic metavolcanics (sericite schist, breccia, crystal tuff and lapilli tuff). The rocks are schistose, moderately to highly carbonated and contain minor amounts of chloritoid. A large diabase dike cuts across the west end of the Bear Open Pit and a small northeast-trending diabase dike can be traced the length of the pit.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The average grade of ore extracted from the pit was 40% Fe and 25-35% S.

Notes: At the most recent visit to the pit, it was water filled. The site is easily accessibly by foot or ATV and the road is mostly driveable in dry weather. The pit walls are crumbling and sloughing into the pit, particularly at the east end. There has been some attempt to neutralize the site with limestone, but this has been mostly ineffective. The surface of the sulphide facies iron formation outcrops still present are deeply pitted and numerous caverns have been developed on the surface.
