Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The multiple separate iron ranges in the Goudreau area are presumably segments of a single iron formation that has been folded and faulted. In at least two of the open pits, the iron formation is seen to have been tectonically thickened by tight isoclinal folding. The iron formation occurs at the contact between the intermediate to felsic metavolcanics of cycle one and th eintermediate to mafic metavolcanics of cycle 2. The major difference between these iron ranges and the ones exposed north of Wawa is that the siderite of the carbonate facies at the Helen Iron Range is replaced by calcite east of Goudreau. This calcite facies is well developed in the A Range. This iron range is poorly exposed and merges to the west with the McPhail Iron Range. It appears to pinch out to the east. The occurrence lies within the northern domain of the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This domain is located immediately south of the Maskinonge Lake sock and is composed of brittle to brittle-ductile high-strain zones.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The felsic rocks found on the south side of the iron range are schistose, carbonated and commonly show chloritoid alteration. The calicite facies is well-developed at this location and was mined for use at the sintering plant at Wawa. In 1926 this calcite facies was described as a crystalline limestone. The silica phase of the iron formation is absent at this location.

Site Visit Information

Date: Jun 27, 2000

Geologist: A Wilson

Notes: At the time of the last visit the pit was water filled. The pit had been fenced off but the barbed wire and fence posts are rusted and for the most part are lying on the ground.
